Senegal Coach Rues Selfishness

Senegal woefully crushed out of the Africa cup of nations after their star striker Sadio Mane wasted a decisive penalty to gift Cameroon a 5-4 victory.

The attack line that also had Balde and Kouyate squandered several goal scoring opportunities in front of goal and looks like the coach is not taking the lack of coordination lightly.

“We were not collective upfront and missed a lot of chances,” Cisse noted.

“What we missed (on Saturday) was the fact that some players failed to realise that they cannot do it alone. It is a big disappointment for me and the entire team.”

The Indomitable Lions maintained a solid back line and were backed up by Ondoa’s superb goalkeeping that climaxed with a penalty save during the shoot outs.

“The Cameroonian defence was compact from the start till the end. We created several opportunities but they resisted all our attacks.”

Senegal were odds on favorite to claim this year’s title after going through the qualifiers unscathed and also first to book a quarter final berth as early as match day two.

Cisse believes the team is still work in progress and can do much better in future.

”For 11 years, Senegal failed to reach this stage. We have worked for two years to reach here. However, there is still a lot of work to be done.

“The elimination is not easy for us. It is hard for us and the country, who were expecting so much from us. I feel sorry for the players who wanted to write their own piece of history.”
