
Youngster Jordan Ssekanwagi was crowned champion in the Juniors category of the Uganda Cycling Federation event that took place on Sunday in Mityana District.
Ssekanwagi, son to veteran rider David Matovu beat off stiff competition from Abdunoor Lubega and Eriteria’s Senegy Tsgey to win the juniors’ title.
After the national trials and the enduro championship, the juniors and women’s competition was the third event on the 2017 Uganda Cycling Federation calendar and Ssekanwagi and Stella Namuganza emerged winners in the juniors and women’s category respectively.
In the event that attracted a total of 31 riders (with 15 as guest riders) Ssekanwagi clocked 2:48:3 to win the juniors category’s 80km race.
The event started at Buloba trading centre heading to Mityana town before eventually returning to Buloba.
Free agent and guest rider, Sam Sabagwanyi posted the overall best time finishing the race in 2 hours, 48 minutes and one second, just two ahead of winner Ssekanwagi.
Super Cycling club rider Abdunoor Lubega finished in second position, clocking 2:48:05 only two seconds behind Ssekanwagi while Tsegey from Tropical heat cycling club settled for third spot with a time of 2:48:07
Ssekanwagi walked home with a cash prize of $100 (UGX 350000) while the first and second runners up got $50 (UGC 175000) apiece.
In the women’s category, only Stella Namuganza from Tropical heat cycling club took part competitively and she finished the 60km race in 2 hours, 1 minute and five seconds.
The next event on the Uganda Cycling Federation calendar is the women’s day race slated for 8th March.
