Kiprotich Wins Silver at Hamburg Marathon

Olympic gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich has displayed wonderful performance by completing second at the Haspa Hamburg International Marathon in Germany on Sunday morning, April 23.

The marathon was won by Ethiopia’s Tsegaye Mekonnen who completed the final 100 metres in a sprint tape reading of 2:07:26, with Kiprotich finishing at a timing of 2:07:31.

Coming third in a marathon that was marked by difficult weather conditions; wind, rain and some hail, was Kenya’s Jacob Kendagor at 2:08:50.

Jessica Augusto from Portugal won the women’s race in 2:25:30.

Kiprotich, who has formerly won two global titles, becomes the first Olympic champion to compete in Hamburg’s elite field.

The 21-year-old Tsegaye Mekonnen from Ethiopia, is the fastest runner ever to enter into the race, with a personal Best of 2:04:32 after winning the Dubai Marathon in January 2014.

Kiprotich’s personal best is from the Tokyo Marathon in 2015 in 2:06:33.

The elite runners, including Kiprotich, will share 300,000 Euros (Approx. Shs1.16 billion).
