Muzamir Kakande became the first Ugandan boxer to win a gold medal in an international event after 13 years.

This was a big feat for not only the country but Kakande as an individual who already landed a place at world championship in Hamburg, Germany next month.

Upon return from Congo Brazzaville last week, Kakande popularly known as King Kong was rewarded Shs2m from boxing enthusiast, Sam Buchanan.

And the rewards continue to flow in for the boxer as he was named the best sports personality for the month of June by Sports journalists’ umbrella, Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA).

Kakande was voted unanimously during the sports scribes monthly meeting on Monday held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

The welterweight boxer defeated Clair Merven from Mauritius in the final of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) African Boxing Championships in Congo Brazzaville.

In a month that had several activities, Kakande stood tall with She Cranes who won the first ever African Netball title for Uganda and KCCA FC who won the Uganda Cup to clinch their maiden double getting mentions.

The other boxers David Ayit and Geoffrey Kakeeto who won silver medals in the super heavy weight and Bantamweight categories respectively also got a mention.

Kakande will be joined by the past months’ winners (since the start of the year) to receive their awards on Wednesday July 5 at Imperial Royale Hotel.

The USPA annual gala where outstanding sports personalities in the different disciplines for 2016 are recognized, is slated for 14th July at the same venue.
