The resignation news by the KCCA FC chairman Julius Kabugo last month caught the football fraternity by surprise.
After such a successful 2-year tenure with the club, Kabugo threw in the towel and yesterday, the club announced that Aggrey Ashaba will now take over.
Kabugo who was hosted on 100.5 Bukedde FM sports show on Monday night, hinted on many club issues during his spell.
On why he resigned
I was not forced to leave my role as the club chairman in the beginning; I was assigned to work here for 2 years, so it was the right time.
It was a successful reign, starting from when we brought in Coach Mike Mutebi who many of you had written off because he had not won any cup.
I was supposed to throw in the towel in April 2017 but remember that we had a very crucial game against Al Masry and we had not sealed the league title.
I think my resignation then would have destabilized the team. I would have been very selfish, so I had to wait for the right time.
Securing club Sponsorship
It has been my tenure that saw the StarTimes package increase from Shs300m to Shs800m.
Other sponsorships have come in including a Britam Insurance Package which is worth Shs1.4bn, Prime Media is Shs250m, the MTN deal is Shs430M yearly and now the gate collection is estimated at Shs400m.
Future prospects
I think I have laid a strong foundation for the future plans: Qualifying to the group stages of the CAF champion’s league, securing a Kit sponsor and also reconstructing the Stadium will remain their next challenge.
Best memories
Not losing to SC villa in my two year period at the club, leave alone that game cup final when they cheated us at Namboole when they brought a certain referee from Kenya.
My best games, it has to be the victories against Onduparaka and FUS Rabat at Lugogo.
Improving players’ salary
We are the top paying club in the country and there’s no doubt about that.
Two years back, we didn’t have any player that earned more than Shs1.2m but as I speak, some of our players are now earning Shs2m and better offers are still on the way.
Dependence on KCCA
Two years back, the club depended 80% from the City Authority. But now, the story has changed; our revenue is now estimated at Shs5bn and the Authority gives the club Shs1bn.
Even if the Authority takes away that Shs1bn, our budget will remain at Shs4bn and that still remains the biggest figure in the country.
