After Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredejovic departed, Federation of Uganda Football Association President, Eng. Moses Magogo appointed Moses Basena as Cranes interim coach.
Magogo, at the time, reasoned that since he had limited time to pick a coach, promoting Basena would be the best option, given the latter was Micho’s assistant, and there were two crucial ties between Rwanda and Egypt ahead.
Trusted reports leaked, indicating Magogo had plans to bring a foreign coach, and it was reported that the federation was in advanced talks to land Belgium’s Luy Eymael.
Mujib Kasule, the current Proline FC coach believes that Moses Basena has done enough to earn a full time role.
“We should have trust in our local coaches, and I believe Basena has done a good job with the National team so far,” Kasule said, “The federation should appoint him on a permanent basis.”
Basena steered Uganda Cranes past Rwanda with a narrow 3-2 goal aggregate to take the team to the 2018 Kenya CHAN tournament.
The Coach managed to beat Egypt against all odds in Namboole for the second time in the country’s history, the other time Uganda beat Egypt was in an international friendly on April 4, 1965.
“It becomes easier to work when you are certain of your future instead of speculating on what is going to happen to you next,” explained Kasule.
On Why Cranes lost in Alexandria, Kasule said the boys did put up a fantastic performance though the result was negative.
“The team lacked a typical number ‘8’ to create scoring chances for the strikers and I believe that is why we struggled in the final third as Farouk Miya lacked match fitness. If I was out there, I would have given Muzamir Mytyaba a chance, because he has proved it in the CHAN qualifiers and also on the continent with his club,” he said.
He continued: “And I also think that Kizito Luwagga should have been given more playing time because you saw his impact when he came in.”
Luwagga started the game on the bench and he came in the second half to replace Joseph Ochaya.
