It was in May this year when Makweth Wol struck a brace as Mbarara City defeated Synergy FC at Lugogo in a historical win for the Ankole Lions who joined the top flight Ugandan league for the first time.
Mbarara City whose history has it that the Club was formed as Citizens FC seven years back, got their first Azam Uganda Premier League Victory on Saturday September 16 against Express FC.
Burundian International Pitis Berange scored the lone goal in the 73rd minute to give delight to the ‘land of milk’.
“For starters, I’m happy for this win, it’s our first in the league as Mbarara City FC,” said interim coach Vialli Bainomugisha.
“It was a good game though we played under intense pressure because Express FC is a big team but we have managed to contain them and picked the whole 3 points.”
In their first league game earlier on Tuesday, Mbarara City picked a vital point in Kakindu as they drew goalless with BUL FC, and Bainomugisha confessed to have learnt his mistakes.
“We tried to rectify the past errors that had hindered us from winning our game in Jinja against BUL FC. We have been training on our finishing which we at least tried to perfect today,” he said.
Next for Mbarara City FC is a home game at Kakyeka against visitors Bright Stars on Tuesday September 19 before a short trip to Masaka to face SC Villa on Saturday September 30.
Speaking about the upcoming fixture, Bainomugisha said: “What I can promise is a good game, this is a new brand, the team is well organized.”
It should be noted that he was appointed recently as an assistant Coach to work with Richard Makumbi (Full Coach) who went missing prior to the BUL FC match.
Makumbi is rumored to be in Kenya eyeing the Western Stima FC coaching role.
Commenting on the incident, Bainomugisha said: “His departure has not costed us because the boys played very well. I personally did everything possible and that’s why everything is going on well as we had planned.”
He added: “Makumbi was here with us, but he had to go for greener pasture and I wish him well.”
However, unconfirmed reports have it that Mbarara City is in talks with Frank ‘Video’ Anyau to take over the TopBet Sponsored Club.
Bainomugisha also said that the team’s main problem is the striking department.
