Football governing body, the Federation of Uganda Football Association led by Eng. Moses Magogo on July 31 this year in a press conference held at FUFA house in Mengo, appointed Moses Basena on an interim basis for the role of Cranes Coach.
The appointment of Basena came after the untimely departure of Mulitin ‘Micho’ Sredejovic, citing unpaid salary, and with that short time, FUFA decided to give Basena, then assistant Cranes Coach an interim role for only the Rwanda (CHAN) and Egypt World Cup qualifier double header.
It was expected that a new Cranes Coach, probably a foreigner was to be appointed.
Today morning, FUFA CEO Edgar Watson in a press conference at Mengo, has revealed that Basena will carry on his duties up to the end of the World Cup qualification campaign.
“The Executive committee has come up with a decision that Moses Basena will remain as the Uganda Cranes Coach until the end of the World Cup campaign,” he said.
“Basena will be assisted by Matia Lule and Ibrahim Ssekagya with Fred Kajoba as the Goalkeeping Coach, until the executive committee comes up with another decision.”
However, it is still unknown whether the Federation’s decision to retain Basena is a sign of appreciation after the Cranes’ win against Egypt and Rwanda in Namboole and Kitende respectively, or they lack funds to bring in a foreign coach.
When approached, Watson refused to comment on the details like salary of Basena’s contract.
Peter Onen will be assisted by Hamza Lutalo on the U17 National Team; the U20 National team will be coached by Matia Lule and assisted by James Odoch, with Sam Kawalya as the goalkeeping coach.
Basena and Wasswa Bossa will stir the National U23 team with Sadiq Wasswa as the Goalkeeping Coach.
Uganda Cranes World Cup campaign will resume with a home game against Ghana Black Stars on October 7, and end with a trip to Congo in November.
