Prior to the 2018 African Cup of Nations in Gabon, Ecobank run a campaign dubbed “Tulumbe Gabon Nalo Nakajja” that was aimed at soliciting money to fund the national football team.

The fundraising drive which started in November last year had to run for two months with a target of raising six billion shillings.

After a period of close to a year, Ecobank and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) have come out to disclose to the public how much money was collected.

In a press briefing held at Ecobank head office in Kampala on Thursday, Executive Director Ecobank, Mrs Annette Kihuguru revealed that the drive generated Shs27,861,952 as financial support towards the cranes.

“We are grateful to all Ugandans who participated in this campaign. The entire exercise was transparent and closely monitored by an independent audit firm,” she noted.

Roger Byamukama, a FUFA executive member in charge of marketing and communications who also attended the function thanked Ugandans for the support towards the national team.

“It is great to learn that Ugandan love their country and team. We believe this was just the start and hoping for the better on another occasion,” he said.

The Shs27 million was collected in three ways with 22.9M coming through direct banking, Shs4.5M through mobile and 356,300 shillings through activations in Busabala fest and Enkuuka.

Last year, Ecobank signed a three year contract agreement with FUFA worth Shs430 million remunerating Shs150 million per year.
