FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers
Return Leg Result
Uganda 5-0 Tanzania Aggregate (6-2)
Uganda displayed a scintillating performance to subject Tanzania to a 5-0 defeat in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers return leg on Saturday at Lugogo.
Tanzania went into this game with a 2-1 first leg merit and was out for just a draw to advance to the final qualification round, only to be overhauled by a stingy Uganda with a capacity crowd of spectators that filled the StarTimes Stadium.
A sublime performance for Ayub Khalifa coached side who had promised Ugandans to “Expect nothing but goals” earlier before the game saw the hosts progress to the final qualification round with a 6-2 aggregate win.
After 43 minutes, Margaret Kunihira received Fauziah Najjemba’s cross and turned around brilliantly on the edge of the box before her near post long range beat goalkeeper Aisha Ismail to give Uganda a 1-0 halftime lead.
On return from the break, Fauziah Najjemba doubled Uganda’s lead off a well curled free kick that went over the visitors’ wall and beat Ismail who should have done better for the second.
Midway through the second phase, defender Grace Aluka joined the scoring party when her intended clearance from defense found its self into the back of the net.
In the closing moments, skipper Juliet Nalukenge scored a reflex header off Aluka’s free kick from the center before her late show on the far post completed Uganda’s thrilling victory.
Nalukenge’s brace on the evening saw her accumulate a total of five goals in the qualifiers, with three against the Black Wizards of Tanzania.
Uganda now faces a final qualification hurdle against Cameroon that pipped Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 on aggregate.
The aggregate winner between Uganda and Cameroon will automatically feature in the 2020 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Championship slated to be held in India.
