As all sports events are still on standstill after Uganda went into a partial lock-down instituted as one of the ways to fight the global COVID 19 pandemic, various sports sectors however remain optimistic about resuming once normalcy is restored.

Athletics is one of the many affected sports disciplines with return dates, indefinitely suspending all the planned domestic and international events.

However, the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) General Secretary, Beatrice Ayikoru remains hopeful that activities on the 2020 calendar will still take place once the lock-down is lifted.

Ayikoru told ChimpReports that with the 2020 season ending in October, the Federation will have to adjust and rekindle it’s activities soon after giving greenlight to sports resumption but noted that some will be affected.

“Our season for this year runs up to October 31st and once the lock down is lifted, we shall continue with the calendar of events. Of course some will be affected but this will be determined once the lockdown is lifted. We have two international events on our calendar which will add to our events,” Ayikoru said.

“We remain hopeful that sports events will resume and situation turns to fairly favorable for sports. I am positive that sports sector will resume activities, South Korean situation gives us hope,” she added.

The events were meant to assist the athletes qualify for the Olympics, African Senior Championships and the World U-20 Championships.

Other changes made on the calendar include the cancellation of the TBAC Invitational for few selected athletes which was scheduled for 16th May, replaced with the 3rd Trial.

The 6th Africa Cross Country Championship and the World half Marathon were also shifted from March to October 17 this year and the World Mountain running in November.
