Four-time Masaza Cup winners Gomba Lions progressed to the finals of this year’s edition after edging out Busiro 5-4 on penalty kicks following a barren draw in normal time at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.
Busiro (2019 cup finalists) had created the better scoring opportunities in the open play but striker Gerrard Ogweti, Kuteesa Malida, and substitute Ivan Semwanga failed to convert their attempts on Thursday afternoon.
Gomba Lions shot stopper Francis Anguzu kept the score grounded producing reflex saves to deny Gerrard Ogweti and Kuteesa Malida in either half as the closely contested game grew more physical.
Despite receiving teasing towering balls, diminutive goalkeeper Mutumba Adadi defied all odds to keep a clean sheet as leading top scorer Charles Bbaale (7 goals) failed to get any shot on target.
In the 90th minute, both sides made changes in goal with Busiro’s custodian Mutumba Adadi paved way for Kirabika Juma and Gomba’s Derrick Mbowa replaced Anguzu as the game went into decisive spot kicks.
The record winners proved superior with all penalty takers in Bbaale Charles, Kaddu George, Kafeero Hamis Dagada, Mbowa Derrick and Sentongo Abdallah converting their respective kicks.
Rogers Adriko, Kasule Brian, Gerrard Ogweti, and Edward Mubiru Desty converted their spots for Busiro. Only Kuteesa Malida shot directly to goalkeeper Mbowa.
Gomba Lions have now booked a berth in this year’s final and will play the winner between Bulemeezi and Buddu who faceoff in the other semifinal.
