Uganda’s long distance runner Joshua Cheptegei has for the second year in a row clinched the 5km race in the event that took place at the Port Hercules in the Monaco on Sunday afternoon.
The newly crowned Uganda Tourism Board ambassador clocked 13:14 to reclaim the crown despite being shy 23 seconds to break his world record he set last year (12:51).
Uganda’s golden boy outpaced Bethwell Birgen (13:18), Davis Kiplangat (13:19) and Morhad Amdouni (13:20) who followed in descending order.
The 15km, 5000m and 10,000m World record holder will now shift focus to the forthcoming Olympic gold double in the 5,000m 10,000m scheduled for later this year.
Elsewhere, Kenya’s Beatrice clocked 14:43 to smash the women’s 5 km World Record.
