The Uganda Darts Association (UDA) on Saturday 27th February held their maiden Annual General meeting (AGM) at the Copper Chimney restaurant in Lugogo.

The meeting was the first for the newly elected executive board that was ushered in last year in the aftermath of the elective general assembly.

In attendance was the UDA chairman Engineer Bosco Lepi, vice chairman David Alex Tabaro, Gerrard Khosam (General secretary), Gloria Omwoya (Assistant General secretary), Robert Okalany (Treasurer), James Kasumba from National Council of Sports and the delegates.

The meeting resolved to improve resource mobilizations and promotion of darts development in the lower institutions as lamented by UDA chairperson Lepi.

“We have successfully held our first Ordinary General meeting since being elected in office last year. The sport has been dormant since Covid-19 greatly affected us so much, we’ve tried to introduce technology to the game where so many people will congregate together. We’ve devised a way of having our games between three or four people relayed live from our social media channels as opposed to other physical meetings,” Lepi said.

Lepi further disclosed the major key activities lined up for the calendar year putting more focus on the East African Darts Federation scheduled to take place between 25th to 27th June 2021 in Tanzania.

The Darts association is therefore in the process of seeking approval from the National Council of Sports to assemble a tried and tested squad of athletes that will represent uganda.

James Kasumba, who observed the Annual General Assembly on behalf of National Council as a requirement for NCS statutory instrument 2014, believes that darts can be developed if the association resorts to grassroot development.

“The major challenge addressed is that darts is mainly played and hosted by corporate bodies leaving out the lower institutions such as primary schools. This could be attached to the nature of instruments used which are sharp and scare the possible participants but with proper guidance, we can identify talent from the grassroots and it’s upon the association to tap into talent,” Kasumba said.

He added, “It’s good that the development program is included in their strategic planning and we promise to extend our financial support towards the different activities.”

The meeting also resolved to make strategize on how to improve on resource mobilisations and promotion of darts development in schools and other lower institutions.

The Darts association also agreed to come up with proposals aimed at convincing corporate Bodies to attract sponsorship so that it can mobilize financial support aiming at developing the sport.

Asuga Winnie, Makanga Sarah, Akena Chodry, Pius Kayiso, Alungat Stella, Nakitto Hadija, Osipira Geoffrey along other executive board members and delegates graced the meeting while other attended via zoom due to the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
