Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) is poised to hold it’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled to take place on Saturday 27th March, 2021 at Nakawa Pentecostal Church.

The main agenda of the meeting is to conduct the voting exercise of the new federation executive committee for the period 2021-2025.

Eight different positions will be contested for in the UCF chairperson, Vice chairperson, General secretary, treasurer, National team coach, Publicity secretary, Director Technical and Director in charge of development.

Different candidates have openly expressed interest in taking over the various elective positions with Dr Albert Otete vying for the top seat, seeking to dethrone the incumbent Eng Mwaka Emmanuel.

For starters, Otete, a certified public account, held the position of Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) treasurer in the early parts of this century and was instrumental in opening the UCF account at KCB.

He handed over office with over Shs 5 million on the account which UCF was to use to purchase a container to establish an office at the NCS compound.

In 2009, Dr Otete provided St Mary’s College Kisubi with over 20 chess sets before he promoted club chess through assembling talent to form City Chess Club (CCC) in 2012.

However, CCC temporarily closed down as the promoter was out of the country but Otete expects to revive it in the near future. He has participated in many local tournaments and anticipates to acquire the services of a Ugandan chess coach in the near future to further improve his rating.

Following the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Over-The-Board (OTB) chess was suspended by the Government in March last year but Otete helped the chess fraternity to continue their passion for chess online.

Dr Otete has been a sponsor of the monthly Uganda Grand Prix, the 12-hour 2021 Marathon, the Wanyama Invitational (Ladies) and other several tournaments.

His counterpart Eng. Emmanuel Mwaka will be seeking a second term having took over the Federation presidential role on 22nd January, 2017, succeeding Stephen Luggya who was at the helm since 2011.

Elsewhere, incumbent Otim Isaac (Comrades Chess Club) and Christopher Turyahabwe (Makerere University Chess Club) are seeking for the vice president position.

Incumbent treasurer Ezekiel Masiko (Mengo Chess Club) is vying for the second term against Dennis Kibuuka while Fide Master Harold Wanyama (Mulago Kings Chess Club) is unopposed on the post of National team Coach.

Other candidates include Nelson Mubiru standing unopposed for the Publicity secretary role. Mubiru is likely to succeed incumbent David Muwanguzi who won’t stand again.

For Technical Director, Brand Chess Life Academy director Mukalazi John Vianney is standing against the incumbent in Tebba Jordan (Makindye Chess Club).

Current assistant general secretary Muke Bright and Patrick Ojok are in race for the General secretary role, while the incumbent Henry Ategeka is not standing again.

Mulago Kings Chess Club’s Shakira Ampaire and Elizabeth Kasujja are seeking for the Uganda Chess Federation Director in charge of development role.

The meeting will as well verify membership, confirm minutes of the previous AGM, receive the president’s written annual report and the Treasurer’s written report, debate and decide on any resolution(s) which may have been duly submitted.
