Uganda Christian University Canonsare set to compete at this year’s Zone V club basketball championship for their first time since their maiden engagement six years ago.

At their first attempt in 2010 in Burundi, the Canons did not make it out of the group. But shooting guard Stephen Wundi is confident that his side will compete and challenge for the title.

“Our history in the tournament is poor but doesn’t mean we are just going to participate and return home. I believe we have a good team that is going to ably compete against all the other teams,” he said.

Quizzed about whether the departure of Ivan Lumanyika and Demond Owili at the start of the season left their team depleted, Wundi stated that the team remained strong and composed.

“It is true we miss their presence given the fact that we have no big men in the team at the moment but UCU is one team that does perfect replacements. The coach has been working hard to fill the voids and I think we have not performed poorly without them,” he replied.

UCU Canons departed on Wednesday by road means to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where the Zone V club championship will take place between 1st October- 7th October 2016.

National Basketball League defending champions City Oilers and UCU Canons (last season’s runners up) will represent Uganda in the men’s category while UCU lady canons and KCCA Leopards will represent in the women’s competition.
