Know Your Stars: Karungi, The Female Goalkeeper Who Has Made A Name Out Of Saving Penalties

If you met her off the pitch, you would hardly believe Vanessa Edith Karungi is a great goalkeeper nor would you get the impression she is a footballer.

A jolly 17 year old student at Mukono High School and a goalkeeper with Olila High School, Karungi has made her way to the limelight in what has been a successful year for both her school and club.

Playing in arguably an important position on the pitch, a goalkeeper is often called upon to come up big in massive situations and making sure you clean up the mess whenever your defense line is beaten.

And that is exactly what Karungi has achieved this year as she continues to grow in stature and scintillating performance between the posts.

Penalty saving moments

In the build up to the winning their maiden national ball games championship, Mukono High School needed Karungi’s ability at saving penalties on two occasions (in the semifinals and finals).

In the semifinals, Mukono edged past Gaddaffi Integrated Academy and Karungi rose to the occasion saving three penalties.

It was a similar case in the finals when the shot stopper saved three penalties guiding Mukono High School to their maiden championship.

She went ahead to end the tournament without conceding a goal in normal time(8 clean sheets) and was without a doubt named the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

At her club Olila, Karungi missed the better part of the first round of the Fufa Women elite league due to an injury but upon return, she was instrumental as the Soroti based team went ahead to reach the playoffs for the first time in history,

They finished fourth but Karungi once again saved 3 penalties in the third place playoff against Uganda Martyrs’ High School albeit lost 2-1 in the shootout.

In the Fufa Women’s Cup, the goalie came off the bench to save three penalties as Olila eliminated UCU Lady Cardinals in the semifinals.

Come the final on Sunday, 18th June 2017, Olila needed a brilliant second half display to draw with Gafford Ladies 1-1 in the final of the Fufa Women’s cup. This meant that the game had to be decided on penalties. This provided a chance for Karungi to display what she does best.

She saved once while the other two kickers for Gafford Ladies fired wide and Olila went ahead to win 3-1 and were crowned champions.

Who is Vanessa Edith Karungi?

Born on 8th November 1999 to Mr. Francis Byamukama and Mrs. Rtd Major Betty Akello Otekat, Karungi is the eldest child in the family with two other siblings.

Karungi got her elementary education at Kyebambe Girls Primary school in Fort Portal district where she also sat for her Primary Leaving Examinations(PLE). From here, she joined Kyebambe Girls Secondary School before shifting to St.Mary’s Kitende and later on Kakungulu Memorial where she sat for Uganda  Cerificate of Education(UCE).

She joined Mukono High School last year where she currently studying in senior six.

Getting interest in football

In an exclusive interview with Chimp Reports Vanessa Karungi narrates that she got interest to start playing football in 2013 while still at Kyebambe Girls SS in senior two,

“I loved the game since my childhood but had not developed to desire to play it until my senior two. But because I was a bit slow and could not run on pitch I decided to become a goalkeeper,” she said.

From here, Karungi did not look back and has continued to chase her dream of becoming a great goalkeeper.

When she joined St. Mary’s Kitende and Kakungulu which are traditional schools known for promoting women’s football, Karungi got even better.

Role Model

In a bid to become a better goalkeeper, Karungi has always looked up to the very best goalies both locally and internationally.

In Uganda, she is inspired by Uganda Cranes goalkeeper and captain, Dennis Onyango who plies his trade at Manelodi Sundowns in South Africa.

Karungi also looks up to Germany and Bayern Munich skipper Manuel Neur because of his ability at one on one situations and ball distribution.

Abilities

Karungi stamps authority between the posts with the ability to command the defense line despite being a soft spoken person off the pitch.

A good game reader who always comes off her line to intercept crosses and also good at one on one situations.

Above all the adeptness to save penalties has earned Karungi the rise to prominence.

Targets

After helping Mukono win the national championship, Karungi has set the target to clinching the East Africa Secondary schools title with the tournament slated to take place in August in Gulu District.

Karungi also dreams of playing for the national team, the Crested cranes and with the Cecafa tournament around the corner, she believes the national team coach, Majjidah Nantanda will summon her.

Incumbent Fufa President will vie for the seat unopposed after intending challenger Mujib Kasule was locked out due to failure to meet tmove.ecessary requirements.

The Fufa Electoral commission made the announcement on Monday evening indicating Kasule had salient requirements he did not fulfill hence automatically deeming him unable.

In a statement read to members of the press by Fufa Electoral commission boss, Sam Bakika, three factors are pointed out which Kasule failed to meet.

Firstly, the electoral commission stated that Kasule did not get the eligible members to constitute his executive.

The proposed executive that Mujib Kasule presented included members that either did not relay their academic documents or did not sign in person to confirm their support.

This according to Article 10(5) of the Fufa Electoral code locked the Proline boss out.

The other factors included, not notifying the Fufa CEO two months before nomination and lacking support from at least a subscribed member from Uganda Premier League and Fufa Big League.

The decision thus means incumbent,Moses Magogo will go unopposed ahead of the elective assembly slated for 5th August in Masindi District.

Moses Magogo (in suit) shakes hands with Mujib Kasule after picking nomination forms last week

Kasule showed interest in vying for the Fufa President seat early last week but the process of contesting has not been smooth for him.

The former footballer failed to meet the requirements by deadline on Friday and the commission granted him up to Monday after his car was damaged by unknown goons hence delaying him to return his nomination forms.

Upon receiving the news of cancellation of his nomination, Mujib Kasule has gone on to call for a press conference on Tuesday in Wandegeya where he will announce his next move.

Full statement

Friday 16th June 2017 was the final day for returning nomination documents in accordance with the FUFA Statutes, FUFA Electoral Code 2012, and FUFA Electoral Guidelines, on that day the FUFA Electoral Committee (herein referred to as the Committee) received Nomination forms from a one Kasule Mujib an aspiring candidate for FUFA President and FUFA Executive Committee.

The Committee would like to point out that whereas the said aspiring candidate was required to return the nomination documents to the Committee at 2:30pm on Friday 16th June 2017, to enable the Committee ample time to scrutinize the returned documents, the said aspiring candidate only appeared before the Committee at about 4.30pm shortly before the close of business.

Nonetheless the Committee was compelled to adjourn and reconvene on the next working day, being Monday 19th June 2017.

On this Monday 19th June 2017 the Committee has further scrutinized the nomination documents submitted by Kasule Mujib and found that the said aspiring candidate did not comply with the mandatory requirements stipulated in the FUFA Statutes, FUFA Electoral Code and FUFA Electoral Guidelines for candidature of the FUFA President and FUFA Executive Committee.

The Committee noted that Mr. Kasule Mujib failed to comply with the following articles of the FUFA Electoral Code 2012:

Article 10 (5) Nominations of candidates shall be made by both the Chairman and Secretary of fully subscribed members. Where members are individuals, nominations will be done by fully subscribed members; and

Article 10 (6) Subject to the fulfillment of the eligibility prerequisites, a candidate to the office of the FUFA President shall only be valid if supported by any three members of FUFA where one such member is from the FUFA Super League Clubs or FUFA Big League, the other member being from Special interest groups as defined in article 10 (1) (d-1) of the FUFA Statutes and the other member being a Regional Football Association.

In addition, Mr Mujib Kasule did not also comply with Article 39 (4) of the FUFA Statutes –Only Members of FUFA may propose candidates for the office of President. Members shall notify the general secretariat in writing of the name of a candidate for the presidency of FUFA at least two months before the date General Assembly.

Finally, Article 11 (2) of the FUFA Electoral Code 2012 states Candidatures will be registered by the EC, scrutinised by the EC for compliance with this code, the FIFA, CAF, FUFA and/or respective statutes of the organization for whom elections are being conducted and declared eligible for election after payment of the respective fees as stipulated in this code.

Based on the above reasons the Committee unanimously found that Mr. Mujib Kasule failed to fulfill the mandatory requirements and is therefore ineligible for nomination as a candidate for FUFA President

A day after his bid to contest for the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) Presidency was thrown out, Mujib Kasule has come out to reveal his way forward in regards to the matter.

In a press briefing held at Tipsy Restaurant in Wandegeya, Kampala, Kasule vowed never to end his pursuit for what he calls football justice.

The Proline Football Club proprietor and coach stated that he has several avenues through which he can have his side and opinion be heard and an amicable solution found.

“I have personally lived within the game of football and I have served it diligently as a footballer, administrator and several other different capacities. It is high time we sought another platform to have our grievances heard,” he stated.

“Therefore on that note, my first step will be to petition FIFA not only tell them about the dubious actions going on in FUFA electoral process but also the mess going in the game of football,” Kasule lamented.

In addition, Kasule asserted that incase FIFA does not give them attention, he will seek the courts of law.

Kasule has vowed never to quit before his motive of seeking justice is duly concluded.

“I never quit as a footballer even when the conditions were tough, I never quit when I bought Nalubaale and some people thought I could not own a club, I never quit when Proline was dubiously relegated. So I assure you, I will not,” Kasule indicated.

Mujib Kasule had his bid for becoming a Fufa President thrown out on Monday after the Fufa electoral committee deemed his documents incomplete.

The decision meant incumbent Moses Magogo remains unopposed with the elective assembly slated for 5th August in Masindi district.

Magogo the Worst Dictator to Have Graced Ugandan Football – Mujib Kasule

$

Former KCCA FC player and Proline FC chairman Mujib Kasule has described current FUFA president Eng. Moses Magogo as a dictator.

On Monday, Kasule was disqualified from the race to becoming FUFA president by the football body’s Electoral Committee.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, the former player said on a number of occasions, Magogo has exhibited characters of impunity while running the game of football in the country.

“Magogo has built a fortress at FUFA that he does everything he wants and no body reports him even if they know the things,” Kasule told journalists.

He cited instances where Eng. Magogo has allegedly manipulated the FUFA constitution replacing its clauses with ‘guidelines’ that he said are taken as laws.

Kasule noted that statutes in the FUFA Constitution are not followed but rather the game is governed through an emergency committee.

According to Jiba as he is commonly referred to in the football circles, FUFA House in Mengo has turned into a home of corruption in the country.

“I know there are high levels of corruption in Uganda but what is happening at FUFA is worse,” Kasule claimed.

“Corruption at Mengo is unprecedented. It smells and stinks.”

He cited the Airtel sponsorship deal to FUFA worth shs 1.2 billion per year, 20% of which, he said goes onto ‘someone’s’ account.

In 2013, the telecom and the football governing body inked a Shs 3.8bn to the Uganda Cranes as Official Sponsors and Shs 400m as sponsors of the Uganda Cup and FUFA Big League making it a total of Shs 4.2bn over a period of four years.

Kasule also claimed that a certain percentage of money from Azam Tv supposed to go to clubs is pocketed by some individuals in Mengo.

“They claimed that acquisition of FUFA FM cost Shs 1.6 billion but everyone knows this was a big lie,” he fumed.

In 2015, the Magogo administration bought city businessman Gordon Wavamunno’s   radio station (Wava FM ) on the frequency 102.1.

The former FUFA vice president said he doesn’t have anything personal with Magogo but noted he is not satisfied with the way football is governed in the country.

The visibly hurt former Cranes player accused Eng. Magogo of disrespecting former players and club administrators for his own benefit.

“He has turned the game and FUFA into personal properties. The game is not for me or Magogo but people and players who enjoy it.”

Magogo Called Asking Me to Step Down, Says Mujib Kasule

The prevailing conditions in the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa) Presidential election has created tension and panic from the people directly involved.

A day after he had his bid to contest for the Fufa top seat thrown out, Mujib Kasule has come out to announce his way forward.

Kasule, derogated on several issues in a press briefing he addressed at Tipsy Restaurant in Wandegeya, Kampala on Tuesday.

In his submission, Kasule intimated to the press that incumbent Fufa President, Moses Magogo rang him on phone asking him to step down.

“I did not want to reveal this but I have to because of the impunity and injustices that Fufa are conducting. On Sunday morning, Mr. Moses Magogo called me on phone asking me to step down,” Kasule told the media.

“But I want to state that I’m not into this struggle for positions or appeasements. I’m fighting for the good of the game,” he added.

The Proline Football Club proprietor and coach also indicated that there are reports of making him the 3rd Vice President in charge of the league but he vehemently stated he is not into football for positions.

“There are reports and suggestions that if I accept to step down, I will be offered a position of a vice President but that’s not why I’m contesting. I have been in Fufa, worked under Moses Magogo but I decided to step down. So I’m not seeking for positions,” Kasule noted.

Kasule stated that he will seek the attention of FIFA petitioning them about the status of football in Uganda and if that fails he has promised to go to courts of law.

He further asserted that the Fufa Electoral committee has been manipulated to favor the incumbent President and thus it was in their making to stop him at all costs.

CAF CC: Slow Start Costs 10-man KCCA FC Against Rivers United

A poor display from Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) especially in the opening 45 minutes at Gowon Yakub stadium in Port Harcourt saw them lose 2-1 against Rivers United.

In the game played on Tuesday at a water logged Bernard Ovoke and Frederick Obomate fired Rivers United in an early lead before Geoofrey Sserunkuma pulled one back for KCCA FC.

The Ugandan side finished the game with a man less after defender Habib Kavuma was shown marching orders for a second bookable offence.
KCCA FC started the game on a slow note failing to march the pace of the home side and within 15 minutes, they were two goals down.

As early as the second minute,Rivers United took the lead through Bernard Ovoke.Poor marking from the KCCA FC defenders saw Ovoke direct a ground cross from Sakin’s corner with relative ease into the back of the net.

This seemed to have disorganised KCCA FC with the home side dominating proceedings and making several other inroads.

Powerful and stocky forward Odumwengu fired a thunderbolt outside the area in the 12th minute but goalkeeper Douglas Kisembo was in position to save.

Two minutes later, Geoffrey Sserunkuma got KCCA FC first shot at goal however, it too feeble and goalkeeper Akande saved with relative ease.

A quick transition on the other end saw Rivers United double their lead at the quarter hour mark through

A poor clearance from skipper Dennis Okot gifted Ovoke with the ball and he was quick to play a headed pass for Obomate who slotted at the bottom left side of the net leaving goalkeeper Douglas Kisembo almost static.

The home side continued to be rampant and had a penalty claim minutes later when Ovoke fell down but referee turned the appeal down.

Ovoke who proved to be a thorn in the foot for KCCA FC defence also got another chance to extend the lead but missed the target faced with just an empty goal as his header sailed above the goal area.

With the game destined for the mandatory break, Serunkuma revamped KCCA FC hopes of a comeback firing home at the death of the clock.

The veteran forward was in position to fire home after Derrick Nsibambi’s chest pass off Mutyaba’s free kick met him unmarked in the box and he did no mistake to fire home.

KCCA FC returned a better side upon restart and marched Rivers United for the closing stages of the game.

Goalkeeper Douglus Kisembo limped off after sustaining a knee injury, five minutes into the second half and was replaced by Benjamin Ochan.

Youngsters Allan Okello and Julius Polo to were also later
Derrick Nsibambi almost levelled matters with 4 minutes to stoppage but was unlucky as his tap past onrushing goalkeeper Akande went wide.

The result means Rivers United now move second on the table on 6 points with KCCA FC dropping 3rd with same points. Group A leaders FUS Rabat who take on Club Africain on Wednesday morning also have 6 points.

KCCA FC have two more games two play, one against FUS Rabat at home and the other against Club Africain away in Tunis.

The ongoing chaos surrounding Mujib Kasule’s denial to stand against incumbent Eng. Moses Magogo in the Fufa Presidential polls has intensified, with former players condemning the federations’ actions.

A number of them have described the act as a ploy to keep the incumbent in office at the expense of the game of football in the country.

Former Uganda Cranes Pacy winger David Obua said “the spirit of the game has been stolen with this Mujib Kasule saga.”

“I think it’s absurd for football to go this route! I think if u want to rule football for 30 years you are mistaken. Mujib Kasule is football!” Obua wrote on his official twitter timeline.

He said; “it’s for the good of the game to have fair elections. Accept challenge because a good leader will be at his best when it comes up.”

“Football is for everyone and Mujib Kasule had his ideas and had to be given a fair chance to give his manifesto and try to change football.”

“A fish rots from the head down! The objective was to take the National team for rice at state house. Now it’s evident with these tactics. I see more corruption as well as erosion of the ethics,” he added.

In his career as a player, Obua played for Express FC before looking for greener pastures in South Africa and Scotland.

He is a son of the late Denis Obua who served as the FUFA President from 1998 up to 2004.
