Micho Summons 24 to Start Afcon Preparations

A 24-man provisional Uganda Cranes squad has been named to start preparations ahead of the 2017 African Cup of nations. Micho summoned the team dominated with local based names on Monday morning.

Several foreign based players currently on holiday have been called to start training on Tuesday and Wednesday.

They include midfielder Tonny Mawejje, Jamal Salim, Shafiq Batambuze, Godfrey Walusimbi and Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito.

Onduparaka FC duo of Rashid Toha and inspirational captain Shaban Muhammad make up list that also has KCCA FC’s left winger Paul Mucuurezi.

“FUFA will support the technical team towards preparations and planning for the 2017 AFCON Finals, Gabon,” Fufa Communications director Ahmed Hussein said.

“It is a challenge to the team not getting an opportunity to play in the CECAFA Senior challenge Cup which had been included in the Cranes preparations for the AFCON Finals. We have had to change the plans.”

The squad will have four nonresidential training sessions on 23, 24, 27 and 28 November.

Head coach Micho is expected to announce a tentative program on Wednesday. He will later release the final provisional squad on 30th November before embarking on high profile preparations.

Squad

Goalkeepers: Jamal Salim, Ochan Benjamin, Watenga Ismail.

Defenders: Wadada Nicholas, Okoth Denis, Batambuze Shafiq, Toha Rashid, Kassaga Richard, Lwaliwa Halid, Awany Timothy, Wasswa Hassan Mawanda.

Midfielders: Tony Mawejje, Kizito Geoffrey, Kizito Keziron, Mutyaba Muzamil, Sadam Juma, Erisa Sekisambu, Mucurezi Paul, Walusimbi Godfrey.

Forwards: Lubega Edrisa, Sentamu Yunus, Nsibambi Derrick, Serunkuma Geoffrey and Shaban Muhammad.
