Maroons 2-1 Kira United
Maroons hopes of returning to the top flight league received a huge boost as the Prison’s side earned a comfortable win to go top of the Elgon group.
Goals from midfielder Darmian Nakalema and right back Eddy Kapampa ensured Maroons earned all three points despite Moses Sselubidde pulling one back for Kira United in the game played on Thursday at the Prisons ground in Luzira.
Despite, Kira United marching Maroons in the opening minutes of the game, it was the home side that took an early lead.
Darmian Nakalema rounded off goalkeeper Kimera Abdul to slot into an empty net to give Maroons the lead in the 15th minute.
A quick interplay between Ronald Orombi and Patrick Kaddu caught Kira’s defence flat footed and Orombi’s defence splitting pass found Nakalema and he fired home.
Ayiko Richard almost scored in the 23rd minute off a powerful header but goalkeeper Kimera stood firm to deny him.
Defender Eddy Kapampa doubled the lead for the home side from a free kick, seven minutes after the hour mark.
Kampapa curled the ball past Kira United’s wall and goalkeeper Kimera Abdul miscalculated the ball that hit the ground before going into the net.
Kira coach Kireewa Godfrey opted for double substitution after the break with Jean Kizito and Emmanuel Obitri paving way for Peter Musisi and Yasin Walusimbi.
Kira United returned a recharged side and continued to march Maroons despite failing to find the cutting edge.
Maroons also made changes with Musa Sali coming on for Solomon Walusimbi while Ronald Kikonyogo replaced goalscorer Darmian Nakalema.
Midfielder Moses Sseluyidde scored from a free kick with five minutes on the clock to give Kira United hopes of a comeback.
The visitors continued to pile pressure on Maroons but the prison side held on to claim maximum points.
The result means Maroons ascend to the summit of Elgon group on 20 points two above Ndejje University.
Maroons still have two games to play in the first round with Busia Fisheries visiting in Luzira this Saturday and they will end with an away game against Kyambogo next Thursday.
