Kiira United 2-1 Maroons FC
Maroons will have to wait for another day to return to Uganda Premier League after suffering defeat at the hands of Kiira Young in a thrilling encounter played at Kiira Municipality grounds on Thursday.
The prison warders came into the game needing just victory to seal qualification to the top tier league but their hopes were tainted with Kiira united who also locked in the promotion battle winning 2-1 to move to second position six points behind Maroons in the Elgon group.
Mose Sseluyidde and second half substitute Najib Ssali scored for Kiira United while Kaddu Patrick pulled one for the visitors as Maroons were condemned to their second loss this season. The first was against Ndejje University a fortnight ago.
The two sides played a cautious game at the start but Maroons grew in composure and started to dominate proceedings after the first ten minutes.
A quick counter ignited by Solomon Walusimbi saw Maroons break down Kiira’s defence with Kaddu releasing Pius Obuya on the far end but the teenager was denied by the woodwork with his effort ricocheting off in the 25th minute.
However, it was the visitors who took the lead at the half hour mark through Moses Sseluyidde’s well taken low free kick that went past goalkeeper Jamal Maliyamungu.
Kiira’s lead didn’t last long with Patrick Kaddu heading home Ronald Orombi’s free kick seven minutes later to level matter and the two sides went into the mandatory break at per.
Muhammed Ssenfuma made several changes after recess introducing Ssekitoleko Hakim,Christoher Kawagu and Najib Ssali and the changes paid off dividends with Ssali striking home in the 75th minute.
The result means Maroons remain top of Elgon group on 39 points while Kiira United move to 33 points leap frogging Ndejje University who now drop to 3rd on 31 points.
Maroons have three games led to the end of the season with an away fixture against Busia before playing at home against Kyambogo United and Sporting United
