Synergy football club from Masaka District finally earned a slot in this year’s promotion playoffs to determine the teams that will get promoted to the Uganda Premier League.
With group leaders in either group of Rwenzori and Elgon qualifying automatically, the battle left is to determine the third team.
Synergy needed a late goal from midfielder Solomon Okwalinga to edge past relegation candidates Entebbe football club in the game played at Masaka recreation centre on Sunday.
Okwalinga struck home towards the end of the game and the victory eventually was enough for Brian Ssenyondo’s charges to seal a playoff slot after rivals Nyamityobora were outwitted 4-1 by Mbarara City.
With just one game left to wind up the regular season, the result meant Synergy will at least finish third in Rwenzori group currently having 40 points, 5 above Nyamityobora.
Mbarara City’s 4-1 win against Nyamityobora also meant that Richard Makumbi’s side also sealed a slot in the playoffs with the victory taking them second on 42 points in the Rwenzori group.
Synergy and Mbarara City will face off in their final game of the regular season to determine who finishes either second or third.
In the other game played in Rwenzori group, Hope Doves and Water played out to a goalless draw.
Ndejje University also confirmed their chances of returning to the playoffs for the second time in a row with a convincing 4-0 victory against Artland Katale.
Ndejje moved to 39 points in second place and Kiira United who are third on 36 points will need to win their final game to seal a playoff slot after a 3-3 draw against Simba
Paidha Black Angels who ate fourth on 31 points still have a chance should they win all the 3 games they have.
