UBL Inject Shs500m into 2017 Uganda Golf Open

Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) has continued to commit their support towards the game of golf and in particular the Uganda Golf Open.

Through, their premium brand Tusker Malt Lager, UBL has on Wednesday morning announced sponsorship for the 78th edition of the annual Tusker Malt Uganda Open Golf tournament.

Tusker Malt Lager has injected over Shs500 million into this year’s tournament as assurance to show its support for the development of the game of golf in Uganda.

While unveiling the sponsorship package at Uganda Golf Course in Kitante; Juliana Kaggwa, the marketing director at Uganda Breweries Limited indicated the cash sponsorship has increased to make the tournament more competitive.

“It is my pleasure to announce our continued support to golf. We believe golf is not just a game but it offers social economic benefit,” she said.

“In a bid to further raise the profile of the Tusker Malt Uganda Golf Open within the region and sub-Sahara Africa, as well as attract notable professional players from across the globe, Tusker Malt has amplified its cash sponsorship of this year’s tournament.”

Kaggwa believes the partnership with Uganda Golf Union has yielded mutual benefits and as a brand, they are willing to push the tournament to greater heights.

“Our partnership with the Uganda Golf Union from 2010 has yielded tremendous results. Our ultimate aim is to work closely with the Union to turn Uganda golf open into one of the biggest and most sought after tournaments in Africa,” she said.

There has been an increase in the cash sponsorship from Shs230m that was allocated last year to Shs250m this year.

The other Shs250m will be in kind to cater for Public relations and dinner events and marketing the tournament.

Uganda Golf Union President, Johnson Omolo who graced the occasion thanked Tusker Malt for the continued support to the game.

“We are proud of the association with Uganda Breweries Limited through their brand, Tusker Malt Lager to the game of golf and we promise to keep the marriage,” he noted.

About the tournament

Running for the 78th edition, the 2017 Uganda Open is expected to be thrilling and more competitive than ever before.

Already, the Ladies Open has been spiced up by including it to the open category.

The open will have three parts with the ladies playing from September 7 -9, 2017 in a total of 54 holes at the Uganda golf course.

About 70 ladies are expected to take part in the amateur section with the men joining in the subsidiary event on the second day.

The other category will be for the amateurs playing between September 13-16.

In group A, over 80 golfers are expected to compete from scratch to 7 during the four days.

Groups B and C are projected to attract between 165-175 golfers.

The tournament will climax with the Professionals category between September 27-30; with about 70 golfers already showing intention including defending Champion Joshua Seale.

The top ten in the amateur category will automatically qualify for the Professional section.

Flavia Namakula won the Ladies open last year, Ronald Otile is the defending champion of the amateur category while Joshua Seale won the Pro class.
