Record champions St. Mary’s Kitende needed an extra effort to edge past a resilient St. Anthony in their first game at the ongoing Brookside East Africa Secondary School games in Gulu.

In the first game on Sunday morning at Gulu High School playground St. Mary’s Kitende staged a comeback to win 2-1.

James Kibande headed home in the 14th minute to give St. Anthony an early lead.

This seemed like a wakeup call for Kitende who made several attempts but kept fluffing one after the other.

It was Brian Kalumba who levelled matters midway through the second half with a left foot finish inside the box.

Kalumba completed his brace in the second half tapping home a rebound after Kyobe’s initial effort had hit the woodwork.

Kitende’s head coach Richard Wasswa believes the start was sloppy but he is confident the performance will improve in the subsequent games.

“Opening games are usually tricky but the good thing is we got maximum points. We shall improve in the next games,” he said.

In the other game played, Kibuli SS defeated host school St. Joseph’s Layibi 1-0 a goal scored by midfielder Allan Okello.

This means Kibuli have won two in two with Okello taking his tally to four goals.
