UCU Lady Canons suffered a major setback when they lost 74-66 to their rival Equity Bank Basketball team from Kenya in the ongoing Zone Five Basketball tournament in Lugogo.

Prior to the game, both teams had not lost a match and the winner would light her chances of qualifying to the upcoming Women’s 2017 FIBA Africa Basketball championship.

In a closely contested battle, the Canons set up a 6-point lead within the 5 minutes but David Maina’s side retaliated to take a 19-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.

UCU Lady Canons came back stronger and regained their lead when they scored more 16 points as they limited Equity to only 12 to clinch a 31-34 lead at the long break.

It remained a close contest as the Canons edged the third quarter with 51-52 score but its on the last quarter when the Bankers overturned the tables as they ran riot to post 23 points to UCU’s 14 to eventually seal a 74-66 victory.

Susan Odhiambo scored a game high 25 points and picked 11 rebounds as Equity won their 5th game in a row.

Mercy Wanyama who played the whole 40 minutes had an impressive display as she collected 20 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists.

Lady Canons’ Racheal Aceng and Zainah Lokwameri scored 20 and 18 points respectively in a losing effort.

In the other games, KCCA Leopards lost to defending Champions Kenya Ports Authority with an 82-58 scoreline as APR swept aside Horseed Benadir.

It should be noted that the top two teams in the 7-team category after a round robin which will be completed today, will qualify for the Women’s FIBA Africa Basketball Championship.
