The Uganda Premier League Secretariat is considering a move of completing the remaining five fixtures behind closed doors once the current partial lockdown is lifted.
According to the rescheduled football calender, FUFA had initially allocated 5th May as a possible return date for the league but that was thrown into disarray after the Covid19 Lockdown was extended for further 21 days by president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
In an interview with Football256, UPL Chief Executive Officer Bernard Bainamani Bampaire said that they are looking at different options of completing the league.
“If all conditions dictate playing behind closed doors and provided there is still playing time, Why not? Provided Government lifts the Lockdown,” said Bainamani.
“Our target is to complete the season with all games played on the pitch, that will force us to explore different measure like playing behind closed doors and if applicable we move in that directions,” he added.
According to FUFA regulations, if all clubs have completed at least 75% of the fixtures and in case of a force majeure, the league can be rendered complete with the standings assumed as final positions.
In event of taking up the rule, current table leaders Vipers Sports Club (59 points) would ultimately be crowned champions of the 2019/2020 UPL season.
Bainamani however, indicated that the majority of the clubs support the proposal to play the remaining five fixtures instead of upholding the 75% rule to determine the eventual winners.
