Ugandan Contingent Flagged Off For Diamond League

A contingent of four athletes was on Friday flagged off at the State House in Nakasero ahead of the Diamond League that takes place in Monacco, France next Friday on the 14th of August.

The Minister of Education and Sports who doubles as the first Lady Janet Kataha Museveni officially flagged off athletes in Joshua Cheptegei, Halima Nakaayi, Winnie Nanyondo and Kissa Stephen.

In her remarks, Minister Janet Museveni lauded the athletes for their excellent performances and raising the Ugandan flag high on the international scene.

She also urged the athletes to be disciplined, act with integrity at all times and avoid temptation of using prohibited substances during these Championships.

The Minister also hinted on government’s plan of renovating a number of facilities including the Mandela National Stadium- Nambole, Nakivubo stadium, John Akii Bua stadium and the Buhinga stadium.

Ahead of the Diamond League, Cheptegei will be aiming to break the world record in 5000m following his incredible performance in the World Cross-country event last year.

Cheptegei also triumphed in the 5000m Diamond League, 10000m world gold and the 10km World Record (WR).

Other personalities that graced the flag off were President Uganda Olympic Committee/IOC Member William Blick, Commissioner Physical Education Ministry of Education & Sports Omara Apiita.

National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr. Patrick Ogwel, Special Presidential Assistant for Sports Gunter Lange and President Uganda Athletics Federation Domenic Otucket were the other dignitaries in attendance.
