Junior Ugandan athletes have kick started the world under 20 IAAF championships in promising style.
On Tuesday, Philip Kiplimo ran his personal best time of 28 minutes and 26:68 minutes to claim the bronze medals in the 10,000 km race.
Kiplimo had earlier qualified for this race after running 28 minutes and 26.30 seconds.
Kenyan Rogers Kwemoi ran 27 minutes and 25.23 seconds to win the gold while Eritrea’s Aaron Kifle came second just 40 microseconds earlier than Kiplimo.
Kifle finished with 27 minutes 26.20 seconds. The other Ugandan in the race at the Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak Stadium, Martin Naibei Musau completed the race at a distant 8th position in the extremely cold weather.
In other developments, Peruth Chemutahi qualified for the 3000 meters Steeplechase finals while Esther Chebet will carry the flag in as she enters the 800 meters women semifinals.
Uganda sent seven athletes to the competition that runs up to 24th of July.
The championships were originally awarded Russia before the hosting rights were withdrawn as a result of the country’s federation suspension due to doping scandals.
