KCCA Football Club plays AS Kigali in the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round seeking a first leg advantage at Nyamirambo stadium in Rwanda on Wednesday evening.
The 13-time Uganda Premier League winners will hope to make amends following their two back to back defeats against SC Villa and URA before the domestic league headed into a long break.
KCCA FC after receiving a bye from CAF in the first preliminary round, return to the same stadium in which they won the finals of the CECAFA Clubs Cup against Tanzania’s Azam FC hosted in Kigali, Rwanda last year.
The Kasassiro Boys traveled to Kigali on Sunday but without eight first team starters alongside head coach Mike Hilary Mutebi who contracted the Coronavirus disease.
These included three goalkeepers Charles Lukwago (captain), Hassan Matovu and Ali Mwirusi alongside other outfield players in Dennis Iguma, Loro Mazengo, Brian Ahebwa, Andrew Kigozi Samson among others.
Morley Byekwaso, who will be on KCCA’s touchline traveled with youngstars Bright Anukani, Sadat Anaku and Steven Sserwadda who could have their continental debut.
Academy graduate Moses Aliro passed his fitness test and is fit to play having missed the last two league games against SC Villa and URA FC due to injury. He is anticipated to be deployed in goal.
Forward Samuel Ssenyonjo who has 8 goals in 9 games for KCCA FC will be hoping to make his CAF debut as teenagers Kafumbe Joseph and Kizza Bukenya who are fresh from the AFCON U20 qualifiers in Tanzania, earned their first CAF trip and will be hoping to impress if handed an opportunity to play.
Tactician Byekwaso believes the team is prepared enough to face AS Kigali despite the challenges.
“We are prepared to take on AS Kigali. We want to pick a decent result in Rwanda. We have a team that can help us compete and get us the result we want. We will not have a number of our players because of COVID but we have to work with what we have.We are here to play and defend the badge,” Byekwaso told KCCA media.
The aggregate winner after the return leg game in Kampala will advance to the final round before progressing to the group stages
