Goals from George Senkaaba, Charles Musiige and Godfrey Lwesibawa ended Wakiso Giants’ unbeaten run as Express ascended to the Uganda Premier League summit on Friday.
Wakiso Giants had drawn eight times with one win from their opening nine League games only to be subjected to their first defeat at Mutesa II stadium in Wankulukuku.
Express took the lead after seven minutes when striker George Senkaaba tapped in lanky forward Kambale’s laboured efforts.
Orthodox right winger Lwesibawa’s free kick had met Kambale in the box before the he squared to unmarked Senkaaba who pounced home Express’ opener.
Four minutes later, speed merchant Musiige beat the offside trap and raced on Kambale’s defense splitting pass before firing home past Purple Sharks goalkeeper Samson Kirya for the second.
Express would have scored more but goalkeeper Kirya denied onrushing full back Arthur Kiggundu from close range before defender Simon Namwanja blocked Lwesibawa’s goal bound shot, moments after.
In the 52nd minute, Express put the game beyond Wakiso Giants’ reach when shot stopper Kirya mis-timed Lwesibawa’s brilliantly curled free kick that deflected on Wakiso Giants’ wall and hit the net.
Kirya later made four back-to-back saves denying eventual man of the match Kambale, Senkaaba, substitute Frank Kalanda and Mahad Yaya Kakooza.
The win kept Express’ unbeaten run intact, tallying 22 points on top after match-day ten while Wakiso Giants remained 11th on 11 points.
The six-time League champions will visit Kitara next Tuesday as Wakiso Giants return home for wounded MYDA on the same day.
