Uganda Cup: New Sponsor Unveiled

Paint company Kansai Plascon has joined Stanbic Bank to sponsor the Uganda Cup seasonal knockout tournament.

The new sponsors on board where unveiled on Friday morning at the company’s headquarters in Kampala – Third street, Industrial Area injecting a total of One hundred Thirty-two millions (Shs 132m) for the next two years.

The ceremony had the Company’s managing Director Santosh Kumte, Moses Kato (National Sales manager), FUFA Deputy CEO in charge of Football Humphrey Mandu, FUFA Competitions Director Hajjat Aisha Nalule and the Minister of state for Youth and Children affairs Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi.

Speaking during the unveiling, paint company managing Director Santosh Kumte felt honored to associate with FUFA’s Uganda Cup.

“I am very honoured to have come on board. We are always associated with sports, we have always wanted to associate with Uganda Cup because of its rich history. This is yet another opportunity for us to extend our commitment to sports and football in particular,” he noted.

Recently, the company signed with Uganda Premier League defending champions Vipers Sports Club and are now the official paint partner of the Uganda Cup.

State minister Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, who represented Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) president Moses Magogo, praised Plascon for spreading wings to the game of football.

“We are excited to see that the Uganda Cup continues to grow which is good news towards the development of the game. I wish to encourage plascon to explore more opportunities in some of our tournaments that they haven’t joined like Women football,” the FUFA 3rd vice-president remarked.

Minister Nakiwala furthermore confirmed an increase in this year’s prize money from Shs 132m to 166m and the winner will take home Shs 50m while Shs 20m is up for grabs for the runners up.

Last year, the Stanbic Uganda Cup was annulled following an outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

FUFA competitions director Nalule announced Monday 4th April as the kickoff date for this year’s championship that will only have 32 clubs from the Uganda Premier League and the Fufa Big League.

The 2021 season that will end in July 25th, will be played on a home and away basis save for the semifinal and the final stages that will be played on a knockout basis.

The winner of the Uganda Cup represents Uganda in the CAF Confederation Cup, the second most prestigious tournament in African club football.

Proline are the defending champions having clinched the 2018/19 championship following a 5-4 penalty shootout victory against Bright Stars FC at Masaka Recreation playground.

Express and KCCA Football Clubs are joint record champions with 10 trophies each while Sports Club Villa is one trophy adrift of the 10- time winners.
