Uganda Cranes ex-captain Ibrahim Sekagya has won his maiden title since his promotion to a coaching role at New York Red Bulls II after an emphatic 4-1 away win to Harrisburg City Islanders on Wednesday.
New York Red Bull II have now hit an assailable 62 points from 19 wins, five draws and three losses. Assistant coach Sekagya who couldn’t hide his happiness posted on social media.
“2016 double Blessings Cranes Road to Gabon and Our boys Newyork Redbulls II are champions 2016.So proud of the boys & entire technical crew! Alhamdulillah”
Records.
The victory meant Sekagya’s side set several records including the first MLS-operated team to claim the USL Regular Season Title and in style with three games to spare.
Red Bulls II’s 37 point haul in fourteen away games breaks the longstanding league record while a total 62 points matches the best set by Orlando City SC in 2014. Meaning that Sekagya could make more history in case his charges pick a point from the remaining nine.
The team has scored 54 goals in total just two short of Orlando city’s set two seasons ago while they could set a new clean sheet record if they don’t concede in the remaining.
Emerging regular season champions means the team has better home advantage in the playoffs season.
The former captain was elevated to coaching ranks to the development team in February 2015 after a two year stint with the senior team. He had earlier joined from sister club Red Bull Salzburg.
