Blessed Sacrament Kimaanya SS emerged winnners of the 2016 Buganda Cup secondary schools football edition after earning a hard fought win over Kakungulu Memorial SS.

In the final played on Saturday at Old Kampala SS playground, Robert Mukongotya’s first half strike was enough for Kimaanya to be crowned champions.

Kakungulu Memorial started the game the better side with Lemi Bosco wrecking havoc on Kimaanya’s central defence partnership of Paul Wasswa and Philbert Obenchan.

Lemi came close to finding the target in the 25th minute when he dispossessed James Begisha but his effort wide a few inches off the target with goalkeeper Derrick Were already beaten.

The decisive moment of the gane came in the 37th minute when  Mukongotya who also plays for Uganda premier league side URA FC met a cross from first half substitute Peter Mutebi from the right flank to fire into the back of the net.

After recess, the Masaka based school opted to go defensive relying on counter attacks but Kakungulu Memorial who were pushing for the leveller lacked the cutting edge in the final third.

Noah Mugerwa, the Kimaanya coach applauded his players for putting up a good performance.

” I feel happy that we are champions. The boys played their hearts out, and the performance was incredible and that’s what helped us to overcome them(Kakungulu Memorial), ” he stated.

As Ugandans celebrate the National football team, the Uganda Cranes upon making it to AFCON 2017, the National Prayer Breakfast Committee yesterday appreciated the First Lady and Minister for Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni for steering the team to victory.

This was during the 18th National Prayer Breakfast at Hotel Africana, held under the theme; “We shall know them by their fruits… Mathew 7:15-20.”

The Cranes last month beat Comoros to qualify for the AFCON 2017 in Gabon, for the first time since 1978, and the Committee members believe the First Lady played an important role.

To that effect, the first lady was presented with a foot ball by Mitoma district woman MP Jovah Kamateka and Arua Woman MP, Mourine Osuru on behalf of the committee as an expression of gratitude for “breaking” a curse that had taken the country more than 35 years to surface on the international football scene.

“We appreciate you, Mama Janet; we believe God sent you to the Ministry partly so that the Cranes could make it this time,” said Kamateka who doubles as the vice chairperson of the committee.

In response, the First Lady noted, “We appreciate the Cranes and this is a symbol for celebrating the Cranes, We pledge that we shall continue praying for you.”

The race for a spot in the Russia 2018 World Cup took off over the weekend with a host of games played around the continent.

Uganda Cranes kick started another Herculean task to qualify for sport’s biggest event with a hard-fought barren draw away in Tamale stadium against giants Ghana in a group E opener.

The duo will have quite a job to do in case they are to clinch the only spot in the group after Egypt picked a late winner in Kitentele against Congo.

Fereboy Dore set the Congolese side ahead after just 24 minutes but Mohammed Salah and Al Ahly’s Abdallah Said struck in the 41 and 58th to give Hector Cupper his early lead.

2014 CHAN winning Coach Javier Clemente was the first to be sacked after his Side Libya were crushed 4-0 at the Martyrs stadium Kinshasa at the hands of DR Congo. Experienced Dieumerci Mbokani opened the floodgates six minutes into the game and Jonathan Bolingi doubled the lead in the death of first half. Mbolingi added his second nine after restart before Furman Ndombe Mubele put the game beyond the Mediterranean Knights in the 70th.

The superior goal difference puts the Central African country on top of group B ahead of Tunisia who had to rely on Aymen Abdennour and Ahmed Akaichi’s late goals to see of Guinea at the Stade Mustapha Ben Jannet, Monastir.

Zambia’s Chipolopolo could not be inspired by the large crowds in Ndola as they fell 2-1 to Nigeria in front of their home fans at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium EPL duo of Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheneacho fired in an interval of ten minutes after the half four mark. Collins Mbesuma’s 70th minute goal remained a consolation. The victory puts the Super eagles in pole position after favorites Algeria and Cameroon squaring one all in Blida.

Giants Ivory Coast lived to their billing thumping Mali 3-1 on Saturday night in the second match of group C played in Bouaké with foals from Salif Coulibaly, an own goal and former Arsenal star Gervinho. In the other game Gabon and Morocco produced a barren draw.

In Group D, Senegal defeated Cape Verde 2-0 while Burkina Faso and South Africa drew 1-1.

The next round of matches will be played in the weekend of November 11-13.

The Evolution of Beach Soccer in Uganda

If there is any game that has seen rapid growth in Uganda in recent years, its got to be Beach soccer. Barely 10 years  of existence in Uganda, the game has gone a great stride and gained attention from the beach goers to the media.

Chimpreports’ Fred Mwambu had an interview with the pioneer of the game in Uganda Mr.Deo Mutabaazi the  and below is the extract;

Picking Interest
Deo Mutabaazi reveals he picked interest in beach soccer when he went on a trip to Barcelona,Spain and watched a beach soccer game.

” By 2007, beach soccer was just a leisure sport here in Uganda and I used to see people kick around the ball on beaches but it was until when I watched a Euro game between Barcelona and Juventus that I picked interest,” says Mutabaazi.

“So when I returned from Spain, I took the initiative of trying to promote the game in Uganda,” he reminiscences.

The start
Mutabaazi indicates it was a hefty challenge at the start but because he was committed to see the game blossom in Uganda he kept focused.

He sold the idea of starting a regular league to Lido beach(Entebbe) owner Samson Muwanguzi(RIP) and fortunately he bought the idea.

” I talked to him about the idea of starting a regular and coordinated league and he accepted without hesitation giving us the facility at no cost,”

After granting him the playing arena, Mutabaazi says they lacked basic equipment like goal posts, balls and referees to officiate and there was no organised team at that time.

Mutabaazi recalls the first person he got in touch with Katamba Moses alia Mr.Mosh a musician who was the Master of ceremony (MC) at Lido beach and he helped me organize the first team.

“Mr.Mosh was my student at University so when I saw him at Lido I talked to him and he helped me form the first team called Musicians select,”

Musicians Select had artists like Eddy Kenzo,Buchaman,Sweet Kid,Rocki Giant among others.
The first official game played was between Musicians and officials where Eddy Kenzo was the referee in 2008.

Formation of the league

Between 2008-2009,beach goers formed teams to play over the weekends. Mutabaazi says they started to draw regulations to make the league more organised with the help of Dennis Katabira who would download the Fifa beach soccer statutes and regulations.

In 2009, a group of officials decided to form an organisation to run the league referred to as Uganda Beach Football Committee (UBFC) and by 2010 a national beach soccer league had started.

FUFA pick interest
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations(FUFA) was impressed with the rapid growth of beach soccer in Uganda and in 2010, Lawrence Mulindwa, the then Fufa president supported the game with the first goal posts, nets, balls and other equipment.

The following year,Fufa organised the first beach soccer course for both coaches and referees and 30 in each category were passed out. The next courses were conducted in 2012 and 2014

In 2012, during  the Fufa General Assembly held at Pope Paul hotel in Kampala, beach soccer was officially affiliated to FUFA.

Other developments
After forming the National beach soccer league, the Uganda soccer beach association went ahead to form other leagues that include University soccer beach league that started in 2011,the national school’s tournament, the junior competition and the women’s league.

In the next edition, we look at the national beach soccer team, the challenges and achievements of beach soccer in Uganda.

“I’m happy that the performance in our first two games has been impressive, football is about goals and winning which we are doing at the moment,” he said.

“We reached the finals last season but lost to Vipers Junior team, so our target this season is to go a notch higher and win the title,” added Magera.

On the other hand, Onduparaka coach Adiga Morris confessed they had a poor start but promised improvement in their next games.

“The performance today was poor, the boys got a bit nervous and when they(KCCA) got early goals, the players gave up easily but I believe we shall try to improve in our next games.” he said.

“I like working with young boys and grooming their talents so am happy to see genuine kids playing at this level,” Mbowa told ChimpSports after Proline SA 1-0 loss to Sadolin Paints JT on Sunday.

Yokole Talibu scored the only goal in the 74th minute to gift the junior painters an ideal opening start to the season.

“The focus in this league shouldn’t be on winning games but nurturing the young boys into good players for the future. This is a developing program for Fifa and Fufa and can take the country’s football to a bigger stage in the year’s to come.”

“We as coaches should not focus on competition and winning the games but put emphasis to build the players. They’re just young and should be left to enjoy themselves while we incorporate professional values in them. But I can see a lot of talent to be tapped and nurtured.”

Proline Soccer Academy’s next game is on Sunday 16th October against Treble group winners KCCA SA while Sadolin travel to Naguru grounds to face Police Armless brigade.

Express to Play Behind Closed Doors, Fined for Fans Trouble

In a bid to curb fans’ violence in and around the stadiums, Uganda Premier League secretariat has fined Express FC for indiscipline behavior exhibited after their one all draw against Kirinya on Saturday 1st October at Wankulukuku.

It was reported that a section of the disgruntled fans assaulted the match officials after the final whistle and ended up beating the first assistant referee Sadique Waswa.

“This is to inform that the referee’ s report match #59 Express FC vs Kirinya Jinja SSS FC that was played on Saturday 1st October 2016 at Wankulukuku stadium indicate that at the end of the match, Express FC fans attacked match officials and beat up one of the assistant referee,” the UPL statement partly read. “It is also reported that the said assistant referee lost his phones in the scuffle.”

Donney returns
The match also witnessed the return of controversial referee Robert Donney as the centre referee. He was assisted by Waswa and Draru as the first and second officials respectively while David Nsubuga was the fourth official.

Express FC fans have been synonymous to violence with numerous sanctions and calls from the stakeholders for the vice to be halted but in no vain. UPL further adds that “Despite several sanctions to the club against fans hooligans and violence at the club’s home and away matches, there have been no signs of improvement!”

The secretariat believes that this chaos does not only affect the club’s brand but the league with a risk of scaring away the fans and sponsors- current and potential.

Verdict
“The Secretariat has therefore invoked article 33.2(b) of the Fufa competitions rules to make Express FC play their next home games without spectators in addition to a fine of 300 UAs (three hundred thousand shillings) payable to the secretariat before their next league game.”

Therefore Express have to pay the fine before their next fixture which is away to Kavumba against Police on Friday before playing in an empty stadium next Tuesday versus Bright Stars

SC Villa vs The Saints
Mandela National Stadium 4pm

Action in the Azam Uganda Premier League resumes after a 10 day international break and Sports Club Villa is one of the teams that will be action.

The Jogoos welcome The Saints at Mandela National Stadium on Tuesday with the aim of returning to winning ways after going the previous two games without testing victory.

SC Villa were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Soana before losing 4-3 to Onduparaka in their last game that led to the sacking of head coach Deo Sserwadda.

With the mantle in the hands of Shafik Bisaso who has been elevated from assistant coach to acting head coach, the main target is to make sure the club keeps within sight of league leaders KCCA.

After training on Monday, Bisaso believes the team is prepared enough to face Saints.

“I believe we have put everything that has happened in the previous games behind and our target is to see that we get back to winning ways,” he stated.

“The Saints are a good team and have a good coach in Moses Basena but I think we have worked hard and prepared adequately to take them on tomorrow,” added Bisaso.

SC Villa will be without the club top scorer AbduMalik Vitalis Tabu who sidelined with Malaria. Tabu has scored four goals for SC Villa this season and three in last three games(against Soana,Proline and Onduparaka).

The other players that will not feature against the saints are defender Benard Muwanga and Martin Kiiza who has just resumed training.

SC Villa come into this clash in fourth position on 12 points six behind leaders KCCA FC but with a game in hand while Saints occupy seventh spot on the logo just a point behind SC Villa.

In another development, the Nsambya based club have appointed Robert Ssekweyama as the new assistant coach replacing Bisaso who was elevated to head coach status. Ssekweyama has been coaching Kampala regional side Kamwokya United.

League leaders KCCA FC return from the international break with an away fixture against Kirinya Jinja SS FC on Tuesday at the Bugembe Stadium.

The Kasasiro boys went into the ten day break after a 2-1 loss to fellow favorites Vipers SC and are travelling to a team that has not won a single game neither have they lost at home recording four barren draws.

KCCA vs history
Coach Alex Isabirye goes into the game full of optimism for his first win at the school boys after picking a hard fought one all draw at Express at the beginning of the month. In fact the 13th minute goal scored by new signing Godfrey Mubiru was the first for the Isabirye’s charges after about 650 goalles minutes.

KCCA FC’s first loss was against another newcomer Onduparaka FC away in Arua. The caterpillars had just scored their first league goal at Wankulukuku against Express FC before hosting and defeating the defending champions in Arua.

Kirinya is another newcomer who scored the first goal away at Express FC in Wankulukuku and are hosting the Lugogo outfit. Coincidence?

The Jinja boys will miss the services of winger Musa Magumba who is still nursing an ankle injury but are likely to welcome back Mubiru after a late medical.

“KCCA FC is a big team and are the defending champions with quality and experienced players in nearly every department. but I have planned well for them and my players know well that these are the kind of games to prove a point,” Coach Isabirye said.

The soft spoken coach has a superior head to head record against KCCA FC during his coaching career at SC Victoria, URA and BUL FC. On top of that he has lost only one game to Coach Mike Mutebi.

KCCA FC will be without midfielder Timothy Awany, Hassan Waswa Dazo and Jackson Nunda but the rest of the squad are fit for the job though it may take late medicals to ascertain if Joseph Ochaya will feature after a heavy national duty in West Africa.

Assistant coach Morley Byekwaso is also well aware of the threat posed by Jinja teams at Bugembe and the type of surface but promises to use different approach.

“We know the ground may not be favourable for our style just like it was the case against Onduparaka but we plan to use a different approach in tomorrow’s game if the initial plan fails,” Byekwaso said

Great American Conference
South Western Oklahoma State University vs North West Oklahoma State University

Ahead of the start of the second round of the Great American Conference (GAC), lethal striker Sandra Nabweteme is doubtful to feature in today’s game.

South West Oklahoma state University (SWOSU) host rivals North West Oklahoma state University (NWOSU) at the Athletic complex seeking to cement their lead at the top of the conference table.

However, SWOSU’s head coach Mark Persson will have concern about leading top scorer Sandra Nabweteme who is struggling with a groin injury that could see her miss the Tuesday’s clash.

Nabweteme leads the scoring charts for the Bulldog this season with 16 goals in 11 games. The reigning best FUFA female player did not take part in Monday’s training and will be subjected to a late fitness test if she is to play against NWOSU.

Speaking to Chimpreports, the on form striker indicated she still feels pain after picking the injury last week.

” It was minor at the start and I was able to play our last game on Saturday well against Oklahoma Baptist University but it has been worsening,” she Nabweteme.

Persson charges defeated the Rangers 6-1 in the first round meeting in Alva a game in which Nabweteme netted a brace and now the onus of finding goals will be bestowed on Alimata Robo incase Nabweteme fails to be fit in time.

South Western Oklahoma State University jointly lead the table with Ouachita Baptist University both tied on 15 points after six games.

Feud Between Uganda Rugby Union and Warrior’s Zeno Soars Up

The saga between rugby local governing body Uganda Rugby Union (URU) and Mutoni Warriors player Othieno Owora popularly known as Zeno seems far from getting an amicable solution.

After URU stopped Zeno from playing against Hima Cement Heathens in the quarterfinals of the Uganda cup over weekend, the saga has since become a matter of discussion in the rugby circles with divergent opinions.

According to the Union, Othieno a player of Mutoni Warriors was involved in unsporting behavior when he poured beer on the Namibian team manager in June this year when Uganda was playing against Namibia in a CAR tier 1A game at Kyadondo rugby ground.

In a letter dated 29th September, the Union indicates they summoned Othieno to the disciplinary committee but he failed to appear without any reason.

“The player was summoned to appear due to his unsportsmanlike behavior after he poured beer on the team manager of Namibia” reads the statement.

“Othieno did not honor any summons and refused to answer his phone when called,” the statement further reads.

However, according to Mutoni Warriors, the URU did not use the right communication channels when they were summoning Othieno.

“The Union know that Warriors have responsibility over Zeno as a player, so in case they wanted him to appear to the disciplinary committee, they would have communicated to us officially,” said a Warriors official who preferred anonymity.

The committee slapped a 24 month ban on Othieno for his improper conduct.

Mutoni Warriors declined to play against Hima Cement heathens on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Uganda cup after the referees ordered Zeno not to feature in the game on the orders of the Union a decision that Warriors rejected and Heathens were awarded a walkover.

Joseph Ochaya tapped in Muzamir Mutyaba’s 20th minute freekick to give the  defending champions an early lead but was short lived after Wakalaita converted a penalty two minutes later.

Kasonko fouled Mucureezi at the left side of the hosts 18-yard box leading to the foul. The Jinja boys pushed the champions to their half immediately after restart and the pressure yielded in the 22nd minute when Kirabira handled the ball inside his box wuthbthe referee pointing to the centre.

Wakalaita sent the ball beyond Ochan’s reach with his first goal since returning to the School from BUL FC.

Mutebi’s boys were frustrated with the largely inexperienced boys who opted to amuse the crowds while pressing in KCCA’s half with quick successive counter attacks.

Changes.
Mutebi was forced to introduce Nigerian import Sulaimon Akinyemi after the breather to add numbers in the midfield. He later withdraw Robert Ssentongo for left winger Brian Majwega and in the 79th minute pulled off Sserunkuma for another veteran Kayizzi.

The changes were ineffective as the dogged hosts maintained their tempo with the rhythm from the stands and even closed near a winner but Wakalaita was twice unable to bury chances after beating the offside trap.

Chaos.
Derrick Nsibambi’s last minute strike was cancelled by the referee after he ruled a foul against Kirinya SS defender George Kasonko and the goalie Mutakubwa before the strike.

The ruling angered the KCCA FC bench and the fans who went mad on the match officials assaulting them after the final whistle. Police were forced to fire teargas canisters to calm down the situation that was getting out of hand after the home side retaliated.

KCCA remain top of the table while Kirinya move a step above the red zone with seven points.

Uganda Premier League
SC Villa 2-1 The Saints

Acting head coach Shafik Bisaso got to a perfect start after nicking a hard fought win over the Saints at Mandela national stadium, Namboole on Tuesday.

A goal in either half from on form striker Alex Kitata and midfielder Godfrey Lwesibawa ensured the Jogoos attained maximum points despite the Saints pulling one back through George Senkaaba.

Kitata gave SC Villa a deserved lead 17 minutes after kickoff with powerful effort off his right foot. Kitata controlled a pass from Lwesibawa inside the Saint’s penalty area before slotting home past goalkeeper Joseph Ssebuliba.

After restart, Lwesibawa who has been in sublime form since the start of the season got onto the score sheet in the 53rd minute with a strike just outside the area.

Lwesibawa got the ball on the left flank and he quickly hit it with effort to go past the visitors goalkeeper who had moved off his line.

However, Moses Basena’s charges continued to trouble the hosts and they found the back of the net through second half substitute George Senkaaba with six minutes to time.

The result means SC Villa move from fourth to second position on 15 points, four behind league leaders KCCA who drew against Kirinya Jinja SS but the Jogoos have a game in hand.

On the other hand, the Saints dropped one slot back to eighth position with 11 points.

The quarter final return leg between Uganda’s top giants Makerere and Kyambogo in the University Football League (UFL) is set to be played behind closed doors on Friday, ChimpSport has learnt.

According to Anthony Tumwesigye, the University Football League manager, as organizers, they had decided as a way of taming the growing indiscipline among the supporters of the  2 teams to let the game be played  in an empty stadium.

“We must punish them (supporters) for ashaming us in the previous game between the 2 teams,” Tumwesigye told this website on Wednesday morning.

He says they could not allow such indiscipline continue and had to act accordingly adding the game to be played at the Luzira prison based Maroon stadium had been moved to Thursday.

Last month, only prisons officers saved the situation after Makerere University supporters clashed with their counterparts from Kyambogo at the Maroons stadium in the University Football League.

A mini scuffle erupted a few minutes to the start of the game but this lasted shortly but Makerere university supporters were at it again during recess provoking their counterparts from Kyambogo before a fight broke up.

However, it took the intervention of plain clothed prisons officers who swung into action flogging the stubborn Ivory Tower supporters before sanity resumed at the stadium.

Makerere won the first leg quarter final encounter, thanks to Joshua Lubwama’s 2 goals in either half of the game.
