Caf CL: Onyango Focused on Ultimate Prize

Uganda Cranes keeper Dennis Onyango and his South African club Mamelodi Sundowns are just 180 minutes away from making history in the continental elite club championship.

Sundowns host Egyptian giants and five time continental champions Zamalek SC in the first leg of the 2016 Caf champions league finals in Pretoria.

The South African champions have already defeated Zamalek twice during the group stages 2-1 away and 1-0 at home to finish top of the pool

Onyango is hopeful that his team can replicate the fete and emerge top but should be wary of the threat caused by the Egyptians especially in Cairo.

“I think the biggest challenge is playing the return leg in Egypt,” Onyango said. “Its a very tricky place to play because of their quality of players with a home feeling and their supporters who intimidate the opponents,”

“However our focus is on the two games on the pitch and believe we can do it. But its very important to get results at home first.”

Sundowns cruised through to the finals after topping group B with nine points and further overcame Zesco United of Zambia 2-0 in the second leg of their semi-final in Pretoria to advance 3-2 on aggregate.

“We must fight hard to get enough goals at home and try as much as possible to avoid conceding. We know how important this fixture is for the club, fans and ourselves,”

On the other side, Zamalek survived a second leg scare to defeat Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca 6-5 on aggregate. Wydad won the second leg 5-2 but was not enough to overturn a 4-0 first leg humiliation.

Cranes coach Micho’s message
“Wishing to Uganda GOLDEN BOY with DIAMOND HANDS Denis Onyango all the best in Finals of CAF Champions league to turn his dream into reality.”

If Onyango wins the trophy, he will go into the books of history as the first Ugandan ever to achieve such a fete.

Onduparaka FC endured a tough start to their season where they drew their first home game and later lost 2-0 to Bright stars at Champions stadium in Mwererwe.

Following that poor start, management was prompted to react immediately and appointed Livingstone Mbabazi to head their technical bench. The coach made instant impact picking a point at Wankulukuku against Express FC followed by home victories against KCCA FC, Police and SC Villa.

The team makes a strenuous trip to Lugazi on Saturday to play URA FC in one of the three match day nine fixtures scheduled forSaturday. This will be the first time coach Mbabazi returns to Lugazi after his unceremonious departure before he joined the Caterpillars.

The coach says he knows best the team and expects a positive outcome on Saturday.

“I have worked with that group before, they are very good group of players,” Mbabazi told ChimpSport.

“They have many who have represented the national team and are more experienced than the current young boys I have here at Onduparaka. They know my game approach and style but since I was their father before, I also know some of their abilities.”

The caterpillars sit on the seventh place with a dozen points but have only played seven games, one less than the rest of the pack. A win could see them among the top four.

URA on the other side are the draw masters with nine points from six draws and one win.

“It’s going to be an interesting game to watch,I respect all of them coz they gave me a big lift  before I joined here,” Mbabazi added.

The two have clashed only once at a friendly in Arua before the start of the 2015/16 season with both teams carrying home a point. Feni Ali opened the scores fronnthr spot after Patrick Ochan had been fouled and Tabu Vitalis equalized for the hosts.

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) football club head coach Kefa Kisala has confessed the result against Onduparaka was a sigh of relief to him amidst concerns about his job.

A delighted Kisala told Chimpreports after the emphatic 3-1 win over Onduparaka on Saturday that the win will help bring back morale to the team.

” As a coach, at least there is a sigh of relief but better still is that we played a fantastic game today and the boys gave their all,” said Kisala.

” Everyone played his best and we pushed them even when they got an early lead, we remained focused and composed. It was basically a team performance,” he added.

Kisala has been under immense pressure of late winning just one game in the opening eight a factor that sparked reports that the coach was in line to lose his job.

Asked about whether he feels his job is safe, Kisala said he is focused on making sure they gain momentum as soon as possible.

“Of course every job comes with pressure and once you do not deliver, the pressure keeps mounting but we are now focusing on picking momentum and keep on the right track,” Kisala indicated.

Kisala confessed he still has concerns with his defence but he is optimistic the woes will be curbed very soon.

” We are still struggling in defence perhaps because we are still trying to figure out the better partnership. That is why there has been a lot of rotations but I believe we shall solve that soon,” he said.

Goals from Peter Lwasa,Ronald Kigongo and Shafik Kagimu ensured the tax collectors staged a 3-1 comeback after Mohammed Shaban had given Onduparaka the lead.

Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango is on course to make history with his South African club Mamelodi Sundowns after a fine performance that saw the team thump Egyptian champions Zamalek SC 3-0 in the first leg of the 2016 CAF Champions League Final  played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Sundowns had defeated the Egyptians twice in the group stages and needed to get an edge in the first leg before they embark on a daunting journey to Alexandra for the second leg at the Borg El Arab Stadium on Sunday 30th.

Anthony Laffor, Tebogo Langerman and an own goal gave the South Africans the advantage in a match where Keeper Dennis Onyango was largely quiet.

Liberian international Anthony Laffor scored the opening goal just after the half hour mark from Hlompho Kekana good pass.

Tebogo Langerman added the second goal nine minutes later with a heavy shot into the far corner from close range to double the lead into the break time.

The Brazilians returned from the breather with a mission to kill off the tie as early and their efforts paid off two minutes later when Islam Gamal deflected Percy Tau’s sneaking shot into his own net.

Zamalek now need to score more than four unanswered goals if they are to win the trophy.

UWONET Launches 3rd Women Week with Warning on Unsafe Abortions

By Nixon Segawa and Pamella Amia

The Programs Director Action for Development (ACFODE) Dr. Jennifer Nabukenya Ssengoba has cautioned adolescent girls against indulging in abortion which exposes them to barrenness.

This she noted while deliberating on the subject ‘Reproductive health and sexuality’ at the Girls Arise Conference organized by Uganda Women Network (UWONET) during the launch of the 3rd Women Week at UMA Conference Hall in Kampala on Saturday.

According to experts, Uganda’s high birth rate has led to the assumption that infertility is not a problem here, yet recently many couples have registered problems in conceiving.

These may be fewer than those bursting with fertility but their rate is gradually increasing over time.

“One of the major causes of barrenness is misuse of Family planning methods, misuse of abortion and not getting proper treatment after abortion,” said Dr. Jennifer Nabukenya.

She warned that these almost always cause women to acquire infections in their reproductive system which lead to barrenness.

“Young adolescents think they have access to everything and use whatever they want with lack of proper information; they use abortion methods that are not proper only to find out later that their Fallopian tubes are infected and their uteri damaged.”

She advised girls to always first get proper information about their reproductive health, family planning and know proper places that can accord good reproductive health services instead using information from their peers.

Speaking at the event, The Executive Director of Uganda Women’s Network Ritah Aciro said that the Women’s Week  is to reflect on the challenges the women and girls face find ways of overcoming them.

In her remarks, Aciro urged the young girls to establish their brand and above all identify their visions and that way they will succeeded.

“From ten I knew I was a leader and not only at a local level but at an international level and here l am all because l established a vision”.

During the week a number of activities are lined up, including Sunday prayers for all the girls in the nation, outreaches ,interactions, topics of discussion, human rights studying, and will be crowned with conference at Hotel Africana where over 20 schools have been invited.

We Were Just Unlucky, Says JMC Coach

Jinja Municipal Hippos coach George William Lutaalo believes his team were just unlucky not to pick at least a point in their clash against Soana FC on Saturday at Kakindu.

“We played very well but were just unlucky to convert the numerous chances created in front of goal,” coach Lutaalo told ChimpSports after the loss.

“They didn’t play well to deserve the win but used their chance well even though the goal entered as a result of a cheap mistake. But that said this is a learning trend and we have picked a thing or two from the defeat which we can build on.

David Ssali scored the all important goal for coach Sam Simbwa’s Soana side late in the 70th minute through a rare strike from the right wing. The winger flew in a feeble cross which surprisingly dropped at the back of the net with Wagima fumbling to hold on.

“I can’t fully blame the goalkeeper for the loss but its a lesson to him that much as we are playing he must also be active. That’s a mistake that he must correct before the next game but he is a good goalkeeper who can improve if he puts in seriousness.”

The Jinja team have already arrived in Arua ready for their Tuesday Clash against Onduparaka FC who also lost 3-1 to URA FC at Lugazion Saturday. The team is still rooted at the bottom of the table with only two points from nine games played.

“Its still early to predict how the league will end but what I know is that we shall get some wins which will propel us above the struggling line,” he added.

Coach Sam Simbwa has passed a warning to Uganda Premier League clubs that his team, Soana FC are aiming at the trophy this season.

The outspoken coach said after his club struggled to pick a slim one goal advantage over Jinja Municipal council on Saturday.

“They (players) didn’t play to my plans though I am satisfied with the results after all that’s what we came to pick and build on our title fight,” Simbwa told ChimpSport.

“We are in the title race and are working toward but we take every game at a time. This win pushes us in a better spot inside the leading pack.”

Soana moved third on the log with sixteen points same as second placed Vipers SC who boost a superior goal advantage.

David Ssali scored the all-important goal for Soana FC in the 70th minute. The club has so far scored nine goals, the second poorest record in the top ten but have but boast of the best defensive structure with only four conceded. However the statistics don’t faze Simbwa.

“The scoring problem is general in the league and also worldwide. Strikers are not as lethal as those previous days. But most important is we don’t also concede a lot,” Simbwa further added.

Soana’s next game is at home in Kavumba against Lweza FC on Tuesday.

A superb second half show on Sunday afternoon against a lucklustre Soana junior team ensured Kirinya Jinja SS junior team pick their first league win.

Attacking midfielder Vincent Zziwa netted early in the first half and late in the second to add on Fred Massa’s rebounder to gift the Jinja side a deserved win.

Zziwa swayed a powerful 40- yard freekick that bounced on the top right angle to open the game in the 30th minute. Godfrey Musana had pulled Ashiraf Kawaasi in a build up to goal.

Soana replied the strike through Joel Okello who placed the ball beyond Nabeeta’s reach in the 42nd minute inside a crowded box to end the first half balanced.

The hosts put up a solid show in the second half and in the 50th minute pulled away courtesy of Cranes captain Geoffrey Massa’s nephew who tapped in a rebounder thrown on his way by Bukenya Jamil from Zziwa’s powerful drive.

Age doubt.

Soana head coach William Kyeswa raised concern over the eligibility of Kirinya Jinja SS midfielder Vincent Zziwa whom he wasn’t convinced was below the 17 year old group.

“They had midfield players who were good on the ball and understood each other well,” he said but casted his doubts that “However I don’t think their number 8 (Zziwa) is fit to play with this group. I just don’t know how he passed the test and got the license.”

“Working with young boys needs some patience because you’re just giving them their primary knowledge. So losing two games is not good for the team but we have to give the boys time to learn without a lot of pressure,” Kyeswa added

The Saints vs URA
Bombo barracks ground
Tuesday October 18th, 4:00pm

The Saints return to action on Tuesday at home (Bombo barracks ground) as they host URA after a 2-1 loss to SC Villa last week.

Attention will be on Saints head coach Moses Basena as he faces his former employers URA on match day 10 of the 2016/17 season. This will be the second time that Basena will be facing URA since leaving the club in November last year.

Basena was at URA at the start of last season but he was sacked after just eight games in charge managing a paltry nine points.

Coincidentally, the game that led to Basena’s sacking while at URA came against The Saints, a team that he is currently coaching.

The army side have had mixed results at home picking one win, two draws and losing one game in Bombo this season.

The Saints drew goalless against Sadolin Paints before losing 2-1 to Express. Their third game at home came against JMC Hippos a game they won 1-0 and lately shared the spoils with Bright stars 1-1 in their last game at home.

On the other hand, the tax collectors come into this game in high spirits after an emphatic 3-1 comeback win against Onduparaka and Kefa Kisala is confident the result will spark them to get going.

“We have started the season with dismal performances and results but I believe the win against Onduparaka gives us the momentum to face any team,” he said after the Saturday game.

URA is yet to lose a game on away grounds this season a record only shared by Vipers and Proline. However out of the possible 12 points, Kisala’s charges have picked six points, winning one (3-1 vs JMC Hippos).

The other three games that URA have played away from home include; Kirinya Jinja SS (0-0), Proline FC (1-1) and Soana FC (0-0).

The two sides have met twice in the league, The saints winning one (1-0) while the other encounter ended 1-1.

The saints occupy 9th position on the table just one point below URA who are 7th with both teams playing nine games.

The Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) has come out with a suggestion to increase the number of teams playing in Africa Rugby tier 1A to increase to six.

Previously, only four teams have been taking part in the premier league but the unions, in a letter dated October  12th, 2016 wrote to four rugby federations notifying them of the changes.

The six federations whose teams will be eligible to play in the new proposed format of the tier 1A league include Namibia, Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe (who were supposed to be relegated to tier 1B), Senagal and Tunusia (the latter two won promotion to tier IA).

“Rugby Africa is planning its 2017 season and seeks to develop a more attractive competition for commercial and media partners whilst at the same time offering you more game time,” reads part of the statement.

According to the statement, the union is in advance talks with a potential broadcaster to telecast the games and the format will see each team play at least five games.

“The competition will be played on a home and away basis but the number of teams involved will increase from 4 to 6,” the statement further reads.

A total of 15 matches will be played with each team playing a total of five games. According to the new format that is expected to start next year, the top three teams will enjoy advantage of hosting three games home, travelling twice.

The sixth team at the end of the season will be relegated to tier 1B while the top team in tier 1B will be promoted to 1A. The Union will maintain facilitation of 23 players and 3 staff members per team in every game and extra funds for a hosting team to cater for the visiting team.

Each team will be required to pay $10,000 for participation. However the format is dependant on the reply from the unions that have been written to.

After recording draws in their match-day nine assignments, Vipers and Kirinya meet for the first time on Tuesday at the Nakivubo stadium in Kampala.

Vipers’ hopes of catching up with log leaders KCCA were derailed after Sam Kintu nicked in a late equalizer to earn Proline a point.

They face another tricky and unpredictable side that has held giants KCCA, URA FC, Express and Bul FC in previous games. However experienced Cranes midfielder Hassan Wasswa believes his side has the machinery to finish the job on Tuesday without further slipping.

We are close but need to focus and make sure we avoid unnecessary mistakes that may cost us. We have a great team that I believe is capable of challenging for titles,” Hassan Wasswa told club media.

The visitors are still searching for their first win in the topflight after recording seven draws out of nine outings.

They last held defending champions KCCA FC in a controversial one all draw at Bugembe just days after a similar result against another top giant ExpreGodfrey

“We are going to play an open game and I am sure we are going to win. The boys have now gained enough experience to match the top sides. We’ve played and picked a result from the big guns,” Isabirye told ChimpSport. “Iam sure we shall win this one.”

If fielded for Vipers, Brian Kakaire will be facing his former school and club. This will be his second meeting since staging a man of the match performance for KJT to deny the team a top slot after the 2013-14 big league playoffs finals.

Musa Esenu is back after missing out on Saturday action at Lugogo. The Kitende side will miss the services of Duncan Seninde, William Wadri, Joseph Semujju, Shafik Bakaki and Brian Nkuubi.

Kirinya Jinja will await a late fitness test to determine if Musa Magumba will be played while Godfrey Mubiru returns after fully recovering.
