Uganda Cranes keeper Dennis Onyango and his South African club Mamelodi Sundowns are just 180 minutes away from making history in the continental elite club championship.
Sundowns host Egyptian giants and five time continental champions Zamalek SC in the first leg of the 2016 Caf champions league finals in Pretoria.
The South African champions have already defeated Zamalek twice during the group stages 2-1 away and 1-0 at home to finish top of the pool
Onyango is hopeful that his team can replicate the fete and emerge top but should be wary of the threat caused by the Egyptians especially in Cairo.
“I think the biggest challenge is playing the return leg in Egypt,” Onyango said. “Its a very tricky place to play because of their quality of players with a home feeling and their supporters who intimidate the opponents,”
“However our focus is on the two games on the pitch and believe we can do it. But its very important to get results at home first.”
Sundowns cruised through to the finals after topping group B with nine points and further overcame Zesco United of Zambia 2-0 in the second leg of their semi-final in Pretoria to advance 3-2 on aggregate.
“We must fight hard to get enough goals at home and try as much as possible to avoid conceding. We know how important this fixture is for the club, fans and ourselves,”
On the other side, Zamalek survived a second leg scare to defeat Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca 6-5 on aggregate. Wydad won the second leg 5-2 but was not enough to overturn a 4-0 first leg humiliation.
Cranes coach Micho’s message
“Wishing to Uganda GOLDEN BOY with DIAMOND HANDS Denis Onyango all the best in Finals of CAF Champions league to turn his dream into reality.”
If Onyango wins the trophy, he will go into the books of history as the first Ugandan ever to achieve such a fete.
