Victoria group
Ajax Queens vs Uganda Martyr’s

After Muteesa I Royal University 2-1 defeat to UCU Lady Cardinals, only two teams remained unbeaten across the two groups of the Fufa women elite league.

Defending champions Kawempe Muslim have a perfect start in the Elizabeth group with five wins in five games. Equally Ajax Queens who lead the Victoria group are also still unbeaten in their opening five games(winning four and drawing once).

Ajax Queens will hope to maintain their brilliant start to the season as they host new comers Uganda Martyr’s High school,Lubaga on Wednesday in Bulenga.

Coach Frank Mulindwa is confident confident his side are prepared to take on Uganda Martyr’s.

“All the players are in perfect shape, no injury concerns at the moment and our focus is on the game against Uganda Martyrs as we seek to cement our lead at the top,” he said.

However, Mulindwa has warned the players about being complacent and thinking new comers Uganda Martyrs will be a walk in the park.

“We are not taking this game lightly and I have warned my players. They (Uganda Martyrs) are a good team with young and talented players. I watched them play against She Corporate, so we shall play them like any team,” added Mulindwa.

Ajax Queens have had enough rest compared to Uganda Martyr’s who played two games over the weekend in Soroti.

Uganda Martyrs lost 1-0 to Olila High school on Saturday but redeemed themselves with a hard-fought 1-0 against Eastern Heroes on Sunday.

Ajax Queens lead Victoria group with 13 points in five games while Uganda Martyrs are third on 7 points.

UPL Verdict: Express Earn JMC Hippos Points Despite Loss

In a rare turn of events, Uganda Premier League secretariat has awarded Express FC three goals and three points despite losing 1-0 to Jinja Municipal on Saturday..

According to a statement from UPL, Express FC petitioned the eligibility of some JMC Hippos players who didn’t possess national passports.

“The UPL secretariat received a petition (Ref: ESC/10/16/12 dated 10th October 2016) on Saturday 10th December 2016 in which they allege that JMC Hippos fielded ineligible players during the AUPL match no. 115 JMC Hippos vs Express FC,” the statement partly reads.

“Express FC referred to Fufa letter Ref: FUFA/LETTERS/23/09/2016 which reads in part ‘Bearers of provisional player license after October 22, 2016 shall be considered ineligible players’. In their petition they stated that JMC Hippos players used provisional player licences which expired after the set deadline and that JMC should lose the match by forfeiture,”

received_443589729361999dew

The secretariat has therefore ruled by quoting sections of article 19 of the Fufa competitions rules that JMC Hippos lose the match to Express FC.

According to Article 19(10) of the Fufa competitions rules, “only Fufa registered players shall be eligible to play in Fufa competitions.”

Clause eleven (11) says that, “A club that uses an ineligible player shall lose the match by forfeiture to the opposing team.”

Daniel Shabena grabbed the lone goal of the game to give JMC what was to be their first season win with a simple tap in the 26th minute.

The Jinja side has room to contest the ruling through an appeal option.

Court to Rule on Magogo, Walusimbi Fufa Legitimacy Today

High Court in Kampala is set to deliver a ruling in the case where ‘Fufa President’ Eng. Moses Magogo seeks an order restraining the activities of the registered trustees of Federation of Uganda Football Association led by Dan Walusimbi.

In the case filed on November 30th by the former’s lawyers of Ms Ochieng Associated Advocates and Solicitors, Magogo wants court to issue an order that bars Walusimbi and his group of sullen former Cranes players from interfering with business at FUFA.

Over the past month, Walusimbi and his group have invaded Fufa proceedings, vandalizing property and claiming that the current Ugandan football governing body leadership is illegitimate and should be chased out of Fufa House.

“Magogo doesn’t have a certificate of incorporation and his federation is illegal, so how does an illegality seek for legality,” Walusimbi recently told journalists at a press conference.

“Our cause is to bring sanity to football, the Fufa house at the moment is under Nkwanga Construction and company limited which means it is into the hands of individuals and that is what we are fighting against,” he added.

Eng Magogo notes that Walusimbi’s group should “be stopped from holding out as managers of all FUFA assets, making defamatory statements against FUFA establishment and making any form of communication to existing FUFA sponsors, CAF, FIFA or anybody claiming to be the official representatives of FUFA, until the determination of the main case.”

He says that such situations as those wreaked by Walusimbi and group will bear serious repercussions on the country’s football.

“That unless they are reprimanded and permanently restrained from further insensitiveness, the nation shall risk dire sanctions from the world football governing body FIFA,” Magogo’s statement to court read.

The first court hearing in the case held on December 5th and presided over by High Court judge Ajiji, denied Magogo’s request pushing it to today.

By publication time, only six people from Dan Walusimbi’s faction including Phillip Obwiny, George Ssemwogerere, and Dan Muwanguzi were available at the court house.

Mamelodi Sundowns have suffered their second defeat in the ongoing club world cup after succumbing to a 4-1 loss to Asian champions Jeonbuk Hyundai in their 5th/6th place play-off.

The match was played at the 40000-seater Suita City Football Stadium in Osaka Japan.

The Japanese dictated pace from the onset and were ahead as early as the 18th minute through Kim Bokyung’s close range strike from a cross.

Jeonbuk nearly doubled the lead in the 28th minute but Cranes goalie Dennis Onyango rushed off his line to block Moyeol’s effort in a one on one situation.

The save was not enough to keep the African champions afloat as Lee Jongo struck in a minute later.

Kim Bokyung slots the ball past Onyango for the opening goal.

Kim Bokyung slots the ball past Onyango for the opening goal.

Sundowns situation worsened four minutes to the break after Ricardo Nascimento diverted the ball in his own net.

Percy Tau pulled one back for the Brazilians with a wonder strike three minutes later. The attacker sped to pick a long delivery on the right wing before disposing his marker and hit a stunner from a rare angle.

Kim Shinwook restored the three goal cushion with a fine header after Onyango had failed to clear off an aerial ball.

The result means Mamelodi finish in a disappointing sixth position after recording two losses- both against Japanese opponents.

OPINION: Match-Fixing, the Cancer that is Slowly Eating Up Uganda’s Football

$
0
0

The issue at the heart of this article would leave you wondering about how exactly football in Uganda would move without shady activities.

From the arrow boys to homosexuality and now match fixing is slowly finding it’s way to Ugandan football.

At the time when you thought the local league was on its way to resuscitation after over 10 years in limbo, reports about match fixing have started to pop up.

As a journalist and a passionate follower of sports, the recent cases of players getting their contracts terminated on grounds of match fixing leaves me pondering.

The vice is a serious threat, described by many including high profile sporting figures, sports administrators and governing bodies as a greater threat to the integrity of sports than doping.

The worry however is; despite clubs axing players and terminating their contracts, that doesn’t give a satisfying solution to curb the vice which is slowly encroaching on the game. Besides, the local football governing body, FUFA have remained coy on the issue.

There seems to be no consorted efforts to fight the vice at its infancy.

What is Match-fixing?

Match fixing is when the outcome of a match in organized sports has been manipulated. The reason for fixing a match includes ensuring a certain team advances/gambling.

Similarly, there is also spot fixing.

This refers to illegal activity in a sport in which a specific aspect of a game, unrelated to final result but upon which a betting market exists for example timing the first throw in, booking or corners in association football.

Origin of match fixing

There is no exact proof about when and where match fixing started but there are several cases that can be pointed to dating as far as 1890s.

In England, the first case was evidenced in 1896 between Stoke City and Burnley but the Major match fixing saga happened in 1915 between Manchester United and Liverpool.

With United battling relegation and Liverpool in mid table, bookies were offering 7-1 on a 2-0 win for the home side.

And with the war threatening to shut down the league thus ending the players’ wages it proved a temptation too far.

Led by United and former Liverpool player Jackie Sheldon, 7 players from both sides decided to carve up the game.

Throughout the match, Liverpool’s performance was marked by a peculiar lack of commitment, even down to the penalty they blazed over the bar.

There was also an odd incident where Liverpool players remonstrated furiously with teammate Fred Pagnam for taking a shot at goal.

It later transpired that Pagnam refused to take part and threatened to ruin the bet- he would eventually testify against his teammates in court.

All the 7 players were banned for life, but the bans were lifted in 1919 in recognition of the men’s service in World war I.

How the fixers operate?

Interpol has estimated the size of those illicit market at $500 billion. Once the fixer has gained trust of a player or a group of players, or even referees, he will direct them to ensure a specific outcome such as making sure a minimum number of goals are scored in a particular match.

The victim (player or an official) is promised money to make sure the required/desired result is attained.

In some cases the money is offered even before the game. The funny bit about match fixing in football is that the game is about mistakes.

A team scores against the other because of lapse in defending poor marking or a foul on an opposing player which are obviously part of the game. Thus knowing whether the mistake was intended or not becomes complex.

Spot fixing is even more common these days. This includes things like red cards, yellow cards, number of corners, fouls or throw-ins.

The dubious red cards given to players leaves room for a second thought for example the challenge on Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic by Alex Song (Cameroon) in the 2014 FIFA World cup.

Cases in Uganda

At the start of this season, the friendly match between Express and “Soana” was reportedly fixed.

The game played on 6th June 2016 at Wankulukuku ended in a 3-2 victory for Express. The game was pinned by several betting houses as an international friendly but was later cancelled with reports of a predetermined result arising.

A customer (name withheld) who placed his bet with Elite Betting Company on the correct score of 3-2 was not paid and he lodged his complaint to the Uganda National Lottery Board (UNLB).

The board sought for advice and further investigations by the FUFA committee for match organisation headed by Muzafaalu Zirabamuzaale but up to now, no report has come out.

Charles Ayieko, the then head coach of Soana denied any intentions of match fixing and indicated the game was between Express and MUBS where he also served as coach.

URA FC and Police football club

The tax collectors a month ago, suspended defender Fahad Kawooya and skipper Oscar Agaba on grounds of match fixing.

Investigations are still on but reportedly, the two players confessed to have taken part in the dubious act.

Last week, Police football club chairman, Assistant IGP Asan Kasingye issued a statement indicating the club had parted ways with captain Godfrey Kateregga and Saddat Kyambadde for throwing away games.

According to Kasingye, Kateregga who did not train with the team forced the coach to play him and he ended up causing a penalty.

“One day, Kateregga who was very sick and not training for a week rushed to Jinja on match day and surprisingly asked the coach to field him. We had scored a goal and he caused a penalty against us. The result and score was a loss on our part,” said Kasingye.

Unconfirmed reports indicate it is even worse in the FUFA Big league with club officials, referees, FUFA officials and journalists engaging themselves in match fixing.

On match days, Big league fixtures are displayed on the market especially in Greece, Israel and Eastern Europe markets.

What should be done to stop the vice?

A comprehensive strategy to combat the complex threat of match fixing must be built on a thorough understanding of the nature and scale of the threat by all stakeholders.

An effective way to formulate a strategy is to focus efforts around a number of principles.

Personally I think this can be done in three ways, namely; – Formulation of clear guidelines -Compliance with and surveillance of those guidelines -Sensitisation/Education.

By the time of filling this article, FUFA President, Engineer Moses Magogo was convening a meeting with Uganda Premier League club chairmen at Namboole stadium and one of the key issues on the agenda was match fixing.

Walusimbi-Magogo Case Flops as Fufa Legal Team Fails to Appear

The hearing of the case between Fufa President, Eng Moses Magogo and former Uganda Cranes player, Dan Walusimbi has failed to take off as earlier scheduled after Magogo’s lawyers snubbed court.

The hearing which was rescheduled from Wednesday December 14th was postponed to Thursday under contention by Walusimbi’s lawyers who cited a busy schedule for today. Magogo’s lawyers were however supportive of the postponement.

Magogo’s legal team headed by counsel Ambrose Tebyasa were however nowhere to be seen all indicating they had commitments in other courts.

Allan Mulindwa, the defendant’s lead counsel who was furious said these were tricks played by Magogo’s lawyers to delay the hearing and later on a ruling on their matter.

“We were here yesterday (Wednesday) and we all agreed to come back today by noon, so I’m wondering why a team comprising of about six lawyers can fail to show up?” Asked a furious Mulindwa.

“All of us have engagements elsewhere because even me I had another case somewhere but I had to rush here simply because we all agreed yesterday,” he added.

Magogo through Mr Ochieng and Company Advocates petitioned the High Court in Kampala on 29th September seeking for an order restraining the activities of the Dan Walusimbi Fufa faction.

The Fufa boss sought for a temporary injunction on all activities by the Dan Walusimbi led faction including referring to themselves as the rightful FUFA, interfering with business at Fufa house and talking to CAF,FUFA sponsors and FIFA.

This was prompted by invasion on the FUFA headquarters in Mengo by Dan Walusimbi’s faction and ex-Cranes internationals on two included vandalising of property at the premises.

The initial hearing took place on 5th December before Justice Ajiji but the case was adjourned to 14 December.

However, his Lordship Basaza Wasswa rescheduled it to the next day (today). The judge has therefore advised the legal teams to write a hearing notice indicating when they are ready to have the case go on.

Former Vipers sports club head coach George ‘Best’ Nsiimbe is close to completing a move to Kenya Premier League side Tusker FC.

Sources near the brewers revealed to this website that Nsiimbe was the immediate option the moment Nkata tendered in his resignation.

“Top Club management was caught off guard with his (Nkata) decision but it was important they managed the crisis on time,” the source told this website.

“But still they wanted to fill the void as early as possible and among the names they considered was Nsiimbe’s.”

The source revealed that Nsiimbe was to be assisted by a ranked Kenyan tactician unlike Nkata who chose his.

Nsiimbe was appointed Vipers head coach early I’m February where he led the team to Cup glory despite losing the league trophy to KCCA FC.

He was later demoted to deputy role at the start of this season paving way for coach Abdallah Mubiru.

They were both sacked on Sunday 4 December after a series of poor results.

He has previously coached KCCA FC to two league titles and Tanzanian money bags Azam FC.

Ethiopian giants St. Georges FC have parted ways with Uganda Cranes central defender Isaac Isinde,” ChimpSport has learnt.

“St. George has parted ways with Ugandan international, Issac Isinde after the defender’s contract ended two days ago,” Ethiopian journalist Omna Tadele told ChimpSport.

He added that, “Coach Mart Nooji stated the club has got enough defenders at their disposal.”

The Cranes utility defender joined the Ethiopian giants in 2011 and later renewed his deal two years ago. He has gone on to help the club to four league cups in 2012, 2014 , 2015 and the most recent in 2016.

According to further sources, St George had an option to extend Isinde’s contract but opted not to.

The former Victors FC player has found play time hard to come by since the arrival of Dutch coach Martinus Ignatius ‘Mart’ Nooij. He has also featured for Iganga town council and Simba FC.

St. George is also home to Cranes second choice goalie Robert Odongkara, striker Brian Umony and midfielder Yassar Mugerwa.
