National Basketball League Ladies’ Finals
UCU Lady canons 78-75 KCCA Leopards

This year’s champion in the National basketball league (Ladies’ category) will be determined with a decider (game 7) after UCU Lady canons put up a spirited performance to claim game six and level the series.

The University side needed overtime to go past KCCA Leopards in a thrilling game played on Wednesday at the YMCA outdoor court.

Judith Nansobya was sublime on the night scoring a game high 27 points with eleven coming in overtime.

Nansobya sparked off the game with a 3 point jump shot but KCCA Leopards surged up to take the hotly contested opening quarter 18-14.

UCU Lady canons were brilliant in the second period combining for 16 points while limiting Leopards to just 7 points and took a 5 point lead (30-25) heading into recess.

The intensity kept through even after the break and UCU created a comfortable gap midway through the third quarter.

With 05:54 on the clock, Vilmar Achieng made a 2 point jump shot for UCU to lead with a 10 point gap (41-31) although KCCA reduced it to within four at the end of the period.

Nick Natuhereza’s side managed 18 points while Leopards had 19.

The final quarter was more fascinating with Leopards playing catch up play. With a minute and 17 seconds to play, Flavia Oketcho made a 3 point jump shot to narrow the gap to two points with UCU leading 65-63.

Oketcho converted from a free throw to give Leopards the lead (66-65) with 45 seconds to play.

However UCU levelled the scores with Ritah Imanishimwe making a free throw to even the score at 66 all and force overtime.

Overtime was literally about Judith Nansobya who made 11 points for the defending champions to win 78-75 and level the series at 3-3.

Nansobya had a game high 27 points while teammate Ritah Imanishimwe added 17. Martha Soigi led the scores for KCCA with a team high 24 points.

Norman Ogik early second half strike against KCCA FC in Bugembe ensured Sadolin Paints not only pick a point but extend their unbeaten streak to nine games.

The painters put up an energetic and enterprising show that earned them applauds from KCCA FC assistant manager Morley Byekwaso.

“The game was so hard and physical,” Byekwaso remarked.

“We expected to have the result on our side but missed several clear cut chances, however we appreciate their resilience and strong fight. They really deserved the point.”

The club missed several players in their structure including defender Habib Kavuma who was out suspended, Lawrence Kasadha and Hassan Waswa ‘Dazo’ are out injured while Mpuuga was named on the bench.

“We didn’t play 3-5-2 system because we missed several of our central defenders due to accumulated cautions and Mutyaba (malaria) who has been our key playmaker.  But still, we really feel sorry for ourselves because of the chances we lost.”

Despite the draw, KCCA FC still top the charts with 32 points, four clear off SC Villa in the second place. Both have played 14 games.

“We have to pull our socks and prepare hard to beat URA who we are facing on Saturday in Lugazi if we are to keep hopes of retaining the trophy,” he added.

Geoffrey Sserunkuma had scored the opener to take his season’s tally to nine goals.

Uganda Premier League
Soana vs Vipers
Kavumba Recreation Centre 4pm

Vipers will attempt to keep their pursuit of keeping within the title race as they visit tricky side Soana in Friday’s key fixture at Kavumba recreation centre, Wakiso.

The two time league winners have had a bland start to the season that have them drop as far as fifth position, 11 points behind leaders KCCA.

The dismal performance led to the sacking of head coach Abdallah Mubiru and interim coach Richard Wasswa will be hoping to make quick amends as the first round comes to an end.

Wasswa took on the mantle at the start of this week and opened his account with a stalemate against Saints in Bombo on Tuesday.

Soana under the stewardship of outspoken tactician Sam Ssimbwa have had an incredible start to the season currently occupying 3rd position on 23 points.

However, the Kavumba based side come into the game on the back of a 2-1 loss to Express and would want to get a positive result to keep within the leading park.

Vipers will be without Erisa Ssekisambu who is still sidelined with an injury.

Midfielder Brian Kakaire is also a doubt after picking an injury in the game against Saints.  Halid Lwaliwa and Aggrey Madoi will also not feature against Soana due to injuries.

Soana on the other hand have no major injury concerns apart from midfielder Willy Kavuma who is doubtful.

Head to Head

Vipers are unbeaten against Soana in the six encounters they have met in the league, winning five and drawing on one occasion.

The Visitors have at least scored a goal in each of the game they have played against Soana. (Vipers have scored 14 goals and conceded just two).

AUPL: Express Out to End Bad Run in Jinja

Coach Matia Lule enjoyed a winning start to his tenure at Express FC as his team made away with a 2-1 advantage away to Soana FC on Tuesday.

The Red Eagles travel to Jinja to face relegation dogged Jinja Municipal Council as they close first round business. JMC Hippos have not yet won a league match and sit bottom of the table.

The hosts are hampered with several injuries in their camp but coach Lutaalo believes those available will do the job and break the unwanted season jinx.

Hippos defeated Express at Kakindu earlier in March with two goals from centre back Walangarira Musa and Richard Wandyaka.

“All our efforts are focused towards winning our first game though it’s not going to be easy but we are still hopeful,” coach Lutalo said.

JMC have drawn two of their last five matches conceding seven goals while Express lost only one of their last five.

The team had gone seven games without a victory prior to Mathias Lules appointment.

Express lost both games at Kakindu last season with an identical 2-0 to JMC hippos and Bul FC.

“Preparations have gone well and team is ready to put in a good shift to the game,” Express coach Matia Lule said.

“I can’t promise a win but if we play good game we can get all the three points. I request the fans to turn up in huge numbers to give us more energy.”

JMC Hippos will miss the services of strikers Musa Bankene, Abdulrahim Ajab, while  Kato will wait for a late fitness test.

Captain Mike Mutyaba, Simon Sserunkuma and Ismael Kazibwe are all out of contention for a place in Lule’s travelling squad.

Police FC Axe Players for Match Fixing

Uganda Premier League club Police FC have cracked the whip on two veteran players who are suspected of match fixing, club chairman/patron Asan Kasingye has confirmed.

“I am informing you with a heavy heart, that Police FC has parted company with three of its senior players; Katerega Godfrey the captain, his assistant Kyambadde Sadat for betting and throwing away team matches,” Kasingye shockingly revealed.

Long serving striker Peter Ssenyonjo has also been released from the club after he reportedly travelled to join a club in the United Arab Emirates without the club’s blessings.

“Senyonjo Peter who has gone to UAE on his own frolic without the clubs consent. We have canceled their contracts and wish them well elsewhere,” Kasingye added.

Timbe’s sacking.

Sam Timbe resigned his job on October 22nd where he cited low player morale as one of the reasons for his decision.

He said, “I have discovered that the club players underserving low morale which has led to continued poor results on the pitch is attached to my presence and particularly my recently renewed contract.”

Soana 0-1 Vipers

Erisa Ssekisambu scored the lone goal as Vipers earned a hard fought win against Soana at Kavumba recreation grounds on Friday.

In a game where possession kept fluctuating from either side, Ssekisambu got the deciding goal in the second half for Vipers to earn victory, their first win in four games.

Soana got the first attempt on goal as early as the 3rd minute through Dan Ssewava’s but his effort went a few inches off target.

Brian Nkuubi almost broke the deadlock at the quarter hour mark but failed to convert Brian Kakaire’s cross firing the chance wide.

Keziron Kizito and Erisa Ssekisambu had a quick interchange beating Soana defence but Ssekisambu failed to put the ball past goalkeeper Godfrey Wakabu.

Vipers were forced to make a change with Shafik Bakaki limping off and was replaced by Musa Malunda.

Goalkeeper Ismael Watenga denied Allan Kayiwa making an acrobatic save with a minute to play in the first half.
Kayiwa made a powerful effort just outside the area but Watenga parried away the ball for a corner kick.

The deciding moment came in the 56th minute with Ssekisambu heading home Hassan Wasswa’s cross from a free kick.

Sam Ssimbwa brought on Dan Wagaluka and Hamis Kitagenda but the changes failed to pay off dividends with Vipers holding on to claim all three points.

Ssekisambu almost doubled the lead for Vipers but his shot hit at the base of the post.

The result means Vipers move from 5th to 3rd position on 24 points while Soana now drop to 4th position on 23 points

AUPL: Shabena Cages Red Eagles To Earn JMC’s Maiden Win

Jinja Municipal Council (JMC) Hippos produced a stunning result as they trapped Express FC to earn their first victory of the season in a brawny affair played at Kakindu on Friday.

Daniel Shabena capped his excellent afternoon with a superb goal in the 28th minute to gift the relegation threatened side a 1-0 win.

Shabena pounced on the ball inside a crowded 18 yard line and tapped below Emmanuel Opiyo’s left hand dive.

Vianne Sekajugo had earlier done the donkey work to drill through the left wing and slotted in for Moses Batali whose initial strike was blocked but left floating dangerously in the crowd.

The score should have been doubled, but an earlier chance saw Batali’s tricky penalty rise to rattle the crossbar with Opiyo well beaten.

Batali nearly reclaimed himself in the 41st minute after a systematic inter switch with Sekajugo and Shabena left the midfielder exposed to goal before riffling a thunderous shot which was initially too strong for Opiyo but the keeper recovered and picked on the goal line.

JMC Hippos stagnate on the bottom of the log with seven points into the mid-season same fate to Express who remain seventh with 19 points at least until Saturday matches.

A brilliant first half freekick from attacking midfielder Gaddafi Gadinho was all that Onduparaka needed to overcome Sadolin Paints FC in Bugembe, Jinja.

Gadinho whirled the ball round a four man defensive wall to beat Oringa Franco in goal in what was an epic end to end encounter.

Sadolin came into the game at the back of eight unbeaten streak that ended with a draw on Wednesday with defending champions KCCA FC in the same venue.

The Caterpillars suffered a setback on Tuesday, sharing points with another Jinja side, BUL FC, but can now make the nine hour long journey in jubilation.

First half chances.
Okhuti missed the first glorious chance of the game just after twelve minutes. Gaddafi Gadinho made smooth inroads through the painters mid zone and set up the former KCCA FC striker but his thunderous shot met an equivalent resistance from Franco Oringa.

Caterpillars came close again just to the break but Living Kabong’s sleek curve rose to hit the bar. Okhuti, Okwi and Gadinho made fine touches but Kabong’s final effort failed to remain on course.

The hosts too had equal chances Especially at the half hour mark when Lukungu picked on his half and traded eiwn his right channel to deliver a cross to Kyambadde whose header ended with a deflection on both vertical poles and then cleared off.

Lukungu created another chance a minute later but Ogik’s final product went wide with only keeper to beat.

Uganda Crested Cranes international midfielder Jean Senninde has organized a women football tournament that kicks off on Friday 16 December at Villa Park, Nsambya.

The tournament is open for all women football teams in the country but the top flight (FWEL) licensed players.

“My main objective is to help identify, develop young players and help boost women football in Uganda,” Sseninde told ChimpSport.

She adds that, “The tournment is about women with passion to play and haven’t yet got the opportunity to compete at high level of competition in Uganda which is the women elite league.”

Sseninde plies her trade in the United Kingdom with Queens Park Rangers ladies FC in the English FA women’s premier league.

“Only players and teams that are not taking part in the ongoing women elite league are allowed to participate in the tournament. It’s the first one that I am doing, so hoping it goes well and then we shall organize an improved second edition next year.”

Crested Cranes head coach Majidah Nantanda is the main patron of the event while other special guests include singer Bobi Wine’s spouse Barbie Kyagulanyi.

Odong Happy With Promotion, Eyes Better KPL Season With Kariobangi

Former SC Victoria University midfielder Mathew Odong is elated with the fact that he will be featuring in the 2017 Kenya Premier League after helping his side Kariobangi Sharks to earn promotion.

The Sharks finished second in Kenya’s second division league and thus booked a spot on next season’s league.

“The team (Kariobangi Sharks) had struggled to enter the Kenya Premier League for about fourteen years but finally we broke the jinx and qualified,” Odong told ChimpSport.

Odong joined the team at the beginning of the season on loan from Tusker FC and has gone on to score seven goals and a double figure of assists.

“I joined the club with a positive mind and determined to help achieve the goals set. I managed to score six goals and sixteen assists in the league, One goal in the Gotv shield and three assists.”

The Nairobi based club capped their season with a bronze medal after finishing third in the GOTV shield cup.

“My next target is to help the team maintain slot in the KPL and finish among the top four. I am also aiming at the golden boot next season and hopefully I can.”

Sadolin Expect Minimal Business in Mid-Season Transfer

Sadolin Paints head coach Richard Kirumira has hinted that the club will not be busy in the midseason transfer season.

The Bugembe outfit ended the season in the tenth place with 17 points, which Kirumira says was below their target.

“Our target was to get twenty points in the first round to set a good stage for the last lap which is normally tricky,” Kirumira said.

“We missed our target by three points but the deviation can be explained by the nature of the league this season characterized with so many draws.”

The painters have scored a paltry eight goals so far with club top scorer, Norman Ogik registering five on his name. They have also conceded the least number of goals (10) thanks to Franco Oringa’s work in goal.

“We are thinking of only two additions in our squad; another striker to compliment Ogik and a good goalkeeper to challenge Oringa and keep him on his feet.”

“The difference between our top scorers is worrying meaning that without Ogik, the rest can’t deliver enough. Oringa needs a very strong challenger that will also help us during training the strikers.”
