Cranes Coach Micho has quashed predictions that he could go on to make numerous changes in his team to face Mali on Wednesday.

Mathematically, Uganda cannot progress to the knockout stage after losing the first two games.

“We reached here with an intention to play three cup finals,” Micho said.

“I am happy with the fact that we went very close in the first two finals; however football took away from us.”

“I need to assure our supporters that we shall field our strongest team. It is our strong desire to end the tournament with our heads high.”

19 of the 23 players in camp have been fielded during the two matches and only four -Salim Jamal, Shafiq Batambuze, Yunus Ssentamu and Robert Odongkara- have not got playtime.

“We shall give other players chance in friendly matches during the two Fifa international dates in March and that time we shall experiment. This is a high level of competition and there are no experiments.”

Uganda will be tussling for the third place at least to increase on the money kitty.

“We want to work hard in the third match so that football repays us with a performance on Wednesday in respect to our spiritual owners- the supporters.”

The match will take place on Wednesday night at the Stade d’Oyem in Oyem city from 10 PM local time.

Algeria head Coach George Leekens has tendered his resignation following his team’s elimination from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations going on in Gabon.

The Desert Warriors were eliminated from the continental showpiece on Wednesday after a dissapointing 2-2 draw with a largely reserve Senegal team.

He added; “for the good of all, I prefer to leave even if I do it with a pinch to the heart while wishing all the success of the world to the national team.”

They picked two draws against Zimbabwe and Senegal but lost to Tunisia on match day two.

Leekens is the third coach to leave the Greens in a space of one year after his predecessors  Milovan Rajevac and Christian Gourcuff in April and October last year.

Defending champions, Ivory Coast, suffered shocking exit from the Africa Cup of Nations following an abysmal 1-0 defeat to the Atlas Lions of Morocco on Wednesday night.

The Elephants drew blanks against Togo in the first day, 2-2 with DR Congo on match day two and needed an outright win over Morocco to salve their star studded squad from humiliation.

That was never going to be the case, especially while facing their former Coach Herve Renard who crossed over to Morocco after winning the 2015 title with the Elephants.

Renard, 48, is looking to become the first to coach to win the coveted continental trophy with the third different nation following successes with Zambia in 2012 and the Ivorians in the last edition.

Rachid Alioui scored the lone goal with a scorching shot just after the interval.

The North Africans disarmed Ivory coast in the midfield and launched a quick attack through to Youssef En-Nesyri down the left who later cut in for Aliou. The substitute set the ball and curled a screamer beyond Gbohou’s reach.

The Ivorians launched several efforts to come back into the game but the resolute defending in their target’s goal was determined throughout the remaining minutes.

DR Congo qualify as group winners and will be facing the runner ups of group D while Morocco play the winner.

Lineups:

Morocco: Munir, Hamza Mendyl, Manuel da Costa, Medhi Benatia, Romain Saiss, Youssef En-Nesyri, Karim El Ahmadi, Faycal Fajr (83′ Mounir Obbadi), Mbark Boussoufa, Nabil Dirar, Aziz Bouhaddouz (45’Rachid Alioui, 90′ Khalid Boutaib).

Ivory coast: Sylvain Gbohouo, Wilfried Kanon, Salomon Kalou, Franck Yannick Kessie (84′ Max-Alain Gradel), Wilfried Zaha (75′ Jonathan Kodjia), Cheick Doukoure (52′ Jean Michael Seri), Wilfried Bony, Serge Aurier, Simon Deli, Serey Die, Eric Bailly

Ivory Coast forward Salmon Armand Magloire Kalou has announced his retirement from the national team after the defending champions failed to progress past the group stage at the ongoing African cup of Nations in Gabon.

The defending champions faced an early exit after falling 1-0 to Morocco on Tuesday at stade de Oyem and eventually finished third in group C on two points behind DR Congo and Morocco.

Kalou indicated that he has served the national team for a long time and that it was now time for the young players to take on the mantle.

“I am 31, this is my 6th African cup of Nations. I have been to a final and won another,” he stated.

“This time things did not go so well. There are young players like (Frank) Kessie and (Wilfried) Zaha, I think they are the future of the Ivorian football and I wish them good,” Kalou added.

The Hertha Berlin striker has played for the elephants since 2007 helping the team to win the coveted African cup of nations in 2015, the second title for Ivory Coast with the other coming in 1992.

Kalou who had earlier rejected to play for Ivory Coast preferring to feature for Netherlands switched allegiance in 2007 and has since won 92 caps scoring 28 goals.

The 31 year old former Chelsea striker made his debut for Ivory Coast on 6th February 2007 against Guinea in a friendly game. He scored his first goal against Mauritius on 21st March 2007.

African Cup of Nations 2017
DR Congo 3-1 Togo

Democratic Republic of Congo powered themselves into the quarterfinals with a commanding victory against Togo in their final group C game at the 2017 African cup of Nations.

The Leopards finished top of group C with seven points after making light work against off color Togo earning a 3-1 victory in the game played on Tuesday

Goas from Junior Kabananga, Firmin Mubele and Paul-Jose M’poku were enough for Florent Ibenge’s charges to claim victory despite Togo pulling one back through Kodjo Laba.

Togo were held an early blow with second choice goalkeeper Baba Tchagouni sustaining an injury. Tchagouni had replaced Kossi Agassa in goal after the latter was allowed leave from camp after his home in Togo was vandalized. It was third choice goalkeeper Cedric Mensah who came on to replace the injured Tchagouni

Kabananga put Congo ahead in the 29th minute after picking up a defence splitting pass from Chancel Mbemba to slot home his third goal of the tournament.

The Astana forward beat Togolese defender Sergie Gakpe for pace to control the pass from Mbemba and fire home into the bottom left corner and Congo led 1-0 at the interval.

Formin Mubele doubled the lead for the 2 time champions, nine minutes after recess lobbing the ball past Togo goalkeeper Cedric Mensah after beating the offside trap.

Togo cut the deficit by half with substitute  Kodjo Laba scoring on his first touch in the 69th minute and the sparrow hawks had a chance to level matters a minute later but Emmanuel Adebayor blasted the chance wide.

However, Paul-Jose M’poku erased any chances for a tempted comeback for Togo scoring Congo’s third goal of the day from a free kick with ten minutes to time.

The result meant DR Congo finished top in group D with seven points, one above second placed Morocco who defeated defending champions Ivory Coast 1-0 in the other game.

African cup of Nations 2017
Mali vs Uganda 10pm

Group stage games at the 2017 African cup of Nations climax on Wednesday with two fixtures in Group D.

Uganda takes on Mali at Stade de Oyem while record champions Egypt play Ghana at stade Port Gentil.

With Uganda cranes already eliminated after losing the opening two games, there’s literally nothing at stake but head coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic insists they will treat the game against Mali like any other encounter.

“We reached here with an intention to play three cup finals,” Micho said.

“I am happy with the fact that we went very close in the first two finals; however football took away from us.” he added.

“I need to assure our supporters that we shall field our strongest team. It is our strong desire to end the tournament with our heads high.” Micho emphasized.

18 of the 23 players in camp have been fielded during the two matches and only five -Salim Jamal, Shafiq Batambuze, Yunus Ssentamu,Timothy Awany and Robert Odongkara- have not got playing time.

Mali need to win and hope Ghana defeat Egypt in the other encounter to stand any chance of progressing to the quarterfinals.

The Eagles began the campaign with a goalless draw against Egypt but fell 1-0 to Ghana and their chances to advance seem far beyond their control.

Mbarara Kids Demonstrate Over Kakyeeka Stadium

School going pupils passionate about sports yesterday marched in protest to Mbarara District Offices, opposing the decision to rent out Kakyeeka Stadium for an oncoming motor rally.

The youngsters who were shouting loudly and brandishing placards interrupted a health workshop at the district.

According to reports, some of the districts leaders were paid Shs 5million for the venue by the rally event organizers.

The boys, together sports lovers led by Salim Twaha, a FUFA Delegate in Mbarara maintain  that Kakyeka is a football training ground not a motor rally ground.

“There is a circuit for motor rally at Ntasha in Nambole, why don’t they take it there?” Twaha wondered.

“They are trying to spoil the pitch; this is a dry season and after the serious race, it will be no more” he said.

This he says stands in the way of local efforts to groom young football talent that will perhaps make it into the national Uganda Cranes team.

“Like this is a holiday we are trying to develop young talents and we are not going to develop them from their homes,” he said.

The district CAO Cuthbert Esoku and the RDC Capt. Martha Asiimwe were initially opposed to the rally event for security reasons, but Chimpreports understands that District Chairman J.B Tumusiime Bamuturaki  in a letter dated 11th January 2017 allowed the pitch to be used for a motor rally which will take place on 28th of this month.

The youth warned to strike on the very day of the motor rally if it takes place from Kakyeka stadium

“On the very day we shall have numerous games on 18th; no one to get off the pitch” Salim said

Afcon: The Defending Champions ‘Curse’

Image may be NSFW.

Ivory Coast’s chance of retaining the Afcon title was reduced to zero after a 1-0 loss to Morocco on Wednesday  in a final group C match day.

The Elephants join a long list of defending champions who previously failed to conquer the consequent group stage hurdle.

Brief History.

The Africa cup of nations was first held in 1957 with three participating teams –Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia- in a round robin format. Egypt are the inaugural and also record Champions.

The group stages were introduced in 1968 where eight teams took part in two pools with the top two in each advancing to the knock outs.

DR Congo, the 1968 champions, became the first title holders who failed to leave the groups. The Leopards finished bottom with one point in a group that had United Arab Republic, Ghana and Guinea in the 1970 finals held in Sudan.

Only two holding winners, Congo –Brazzaville (1972) and Ghana (1984 champions) managed to progress from the groups during the eight-team tournament era from 1968 to 1990.

Ivory Coast won the 92’ edition and finished third in the subsequent tournament in Tunisia. Both tourneys had 12 teams before the current 16 team format was introduced in 96.

Sixteen-team era

The system metamorphosed to the sixteen-team format in the South Africa 1996 games. Nigeria, the defending champions, withdrew from the tourney leaving only 15 teams.

Egypt 2012

The Pharaohs became the first reigning champions to fail the qualification test after a historical treble in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Political instability in the North African country forced the Egyptian football association and the government to suspend the local league.

Absense of a local competitive league affected the Pharaohs’ level of competence and dipped so low that they failed to qualify for the 2012 finals, registering only a single win in the qualifiers. They had Niger, South Africa and Sierra Leone in the pool.

Zambia 2013

The Chipolopolo succeeded Egypt in 2012, in a fairy tale run spearheaded by experienced coach Herve Renard. The subsequent tournament was a bitter pill for the nation who failed to make the quarter final grades.

Zambia accumulated only three points from their three draws against Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Ethiopia.

Nigeria 2015

The Super Eagles reigned in South Africa 2013 under legendary coach Stephen Keshi (RIP), and two years later, the three time giants could not scheme a plan to overcome South Africa or Congo. They finished third just ahead of Sudan.

Uganda Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojovic has left out veterans Tonny Mawejje, Geoffrey Massa and first choice goalie Denis Onyango from his starting team to face Mali later on Thursday night.

St. George keeper Robert Odongkara starts ahead of Salim Jamal.

Denis Iguma makes his third start in the right back position as Walusimbi watches the left flank.

Murshid Jjuuko and Hassan Waswa continue their solid partnership at the heart of defense while Isaac Isinde watches from the bench.

Vietnam based winger Moses Oloya makes his way into the first team in this tournament and will play against Luwagga Kizito, Ochaya and Miya in attack.

Luwagga started against Ghana but was relegated to the bench on match day two. Khalid Aucho and Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito will patrol the midfield.

Gulu Elephants have been demoted from the 2016-17 Nile Special rugby premiership for failing to honor three games.

The chairman of the Leagues’ Management Committee, Mr. Simon Mutama, confirmed the developments in a letter dated Wednesday 25th titled “Failure to honour two games’ and directed to the Chairman Gulu Elephants Rugby Club Gulu .

“In reference to the 2016–17 league, Gulu Elephants has missed two consecutive game,” the letter reads in part.

The bottom side failed to honor two consecutive games against Heathens on Saturday 14th and versus Jobs a week later, both in Kampala.

“As per the Uganda Rugby Union competition participation Agreement, Section 5.9 NO SHOW/WALK OVER under sub section C “Failure to show up for 2 games will lead to an automatic disqualification and a ban from rugby competitions for one year thereafter.”

The Northern Uganda club has been struggling financially and have recently been requesting for help from well-wishers through the team’s media links but all in vain.

“The league Management Committee therefore disqualifies Gulu Elephants Rugby Club from the 2016–17 league.”

The Elephants have the right to appeal this decision to the Uganda Rugby Union executive before close of business on Friday. They are also required to part with UgX 250,000 as appeals fees in case they opt that route.

They are currently sitting at the base of the ten-team league with only one draw and no win in nine outings.

Mohammed Salah’s 10th minute stunning freekick ensured Egypt overlapped Ghana to end the group stages at the summit of group D.

Egypt started, the tournament, slowly with an uninspiring stalemate against Mali, then latter survived another on day two thanks to El Said’s last minute gasp. They bounced on the last group game on Wednesday and went for the early goal and protected the lead until the end.

The game rolled of in a lively fashion. Egypt had the first clear attempt just inside the first five minutes when Arsenal’s El Neny powered from about 25 yards only to see his effort fly above the bar.

The Pharaoh’s kept surging at their opponents and the efforts rewarded in the tenth minute. Jonathan Mensah was slow to clear the ball from his area, Salah pounces on it and passes to El Said but Boys hacks him down just outside the area.

Salah whirled the ball over the five man wall and into the top corner living Razak with no chance other than glaring.

Gyan had several attacks foiled by the resolute Egyptians. His most unfortunate bit arrived in the 39thinute when he seemed to have hurt his groin and was forced off a minute later with Jordan Ayew replacing him.

African cup of Nations 2017
Uganda 1-1 Mali

Uganda ended its campaign at the 2017 African cup of Nations with at least a point after drawing against Mali in their final group D game.

Farouk Miya gave Uganda the lead midway through the second half but Yves Bissouma levelled matters moments later in the game played on Wednesday at Stade de Oyem.

There was a heavy downpour moments before the game and the playing surface was water logged affecting the flow of the game.

Mali came into the game with slight hopes of qualifying to the quarterfinals needing a must win against Uganda and hope Egypt lose to Ghana but their dreams were shuttered after failing to negotiate past Uganda while Egypt won 1-0 on the other hand.

Mali started the better side attempting to get an early lead and Moussa Marega almost put the Eagles but his effort in the 8th minute hit the side of the net.

Uganda had a chance to break the deadlock in the 20th minute when Miya released Luwagga Kizito on the right but the latter’s effort was denied after the ball got stuck in a puddle.

Mali skipper Yacouba Sylla had his powerful shot sail above the goal four minutes later after a lay up pass from Bissouma and the two sides went for the mandatory break goalless.

Tonny Mawejje who had replaced Moses Oloya had a goal disallowed in the 64th minute with the assistant referee calling offside on Luwagga Kizito.

However, five minutes later, Miya Farouk broke the deadlock sending a powerful shot into the top right corner and Mali’s goalkeeper Oumar Sissoko had no chance to save.

The joy for Uganda cranes was short lived with Mali levelling matters in the 72nd minute through Yves Bissouma’s free kick.

Egypt advanced as group D leaders with 7 points after Mohammad Salah’s goal earned victory for Hector Cupper’s side. Ghana settled for second spot on 6 points while Mali and Uganda dropped out with 2 points and one point respectively.

The Pharaohs defeated Ghana 1-0 on Wednesday in the last group D match at Port Gentil protracting their unbeaten record, at Afcon, to 23 games. The last loss came on 29th January 2004 at the hands of Algeria.

“We always think of winning whatever game we are going into,” Cuper said after the win adding that, “Our ambition is very high and we are happy to win such a tough game.”

Mohammed Salah scored early in the first half but the Pharaohs attack looked reserved in the second while also allowing Ghana to chart several unsuccessful attacks.

“They were very dangerous especially in the second half.”

“I wished to play a better game especially in the second half, but we were facing a very strong team. We had to draft Ahmed Fathy on the left back because it was a tough game and we needed experience.”

The seven time record champions will face Morocco in another North African derby on Sunday at Port Gentil.

“Our next game is even more difficult but I promise our supporters back home that we will fight till the last second,” Cuper further added.
