Police Halt Mbarara Motor Rally Over Museveni Visit

Police in Mbarara have halted a planned  motor rally that was scheduled for tomorrow Saturday at the Kakyeka Stadium.

The police through Regional Mouthpiece Ibin Senkumbi cited security concerns as the reason for cancellation.

Mbarara District Chairman J.B Tumusiime Bamuturaki had allowed the stadium to be used for the motor rally and was paid Shs 5million according to sources.

This was however challenged by a group of local young footballers who marched to the district offices in protest.

The youngsters claimed a motor rally at the stadium during the dry season would leave a significant damage on the pitch.

Police said another reason for the cancellation was that President Yoweri Museveni is expected in Mbarara on the same day to preside over a Golden Jubilee event organized by the Nyamitanga Diocese and that the two events cannot be held simultaneously.

There is also a graduation event for the Mbarara University of Science and Technology on the same day. Senkumbi says the local police are basically overstretched.

The police spokesperson said after visiting the stadium, they advised the rally organizers to find another venue for the event.

Salim Twaha, a FUFA Delegate in Mbarara advised the rally organizers to take the circuit to Inertia Runway in Kifunfu, Bubaare Sub County in Kashari South, Mbarara district.

Liberation Cup Ends in Fracas, Trophy Not Awarded

The 2017 NRM Liberation cup tournament ended in a kerfuffle and no winner was named at the end of the 3 day competition.

Unlike in the past where games between SC Villa and Express would be abandoned due to crowd violence, this time round it was a different case.

The game played on Thursday at Nakivubo stadium ended in a 1-1 all draw with Nigerian Vincent Onyebuchi scoring for Express while Umar Kasumba levelled matters for SC Villa.

According to earlier communication, the team that accumulated the most points would go on to win the title and in this case it was Express who had 4 points but organiser Yusuf “Chuni” Kyeyune had last minute changes.

Kyeyune insisted Lweza who were the other participants were just a guest team and thus points earned off them did not matter.

Express had defeated Lweza 1-0 on Wednesday while SC Villa played to a 2-2 draw with the same opponent the previous day.

Express FC head coach Matia Lule protested the decision for the teams to take penalties to determine the winner and ordered his players off the pitch.

Fufa club Licensing committee has Friday inspected Kakindu stadium to assess whether the facility meets the minimum standards to host the second round top flight matches.

The committee had earlier threatened to ban the stadium from hosting matches due to lack or dilapidated basic facilities like the toilets, changing rooms and state of the pitch.

On his visit, Dr. Ogwel, the committee chairman lauded the efforts by the three clubs- JMC Hippos, BUL FC and Kirinya- to renovate and fix the mess but urged them to increase the speed so as to finish on time before deadline.

“I am impressed with the efforts the teams have put to improve the standards of the pitch even though this ought to have been done long ago,” Ogwel told the Club officials.

“These facilities benefit you – the clubs and your players. Fufa is insisting on this because it’s what will build our brand and raise the level of professionalism in the country.”

Cameroon’s Indomitable lions roared into the semifinals of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations after edging out tournament favorites Senegal after post match penalty shoot outs.

Liverpool star Sadio Mane watched in agony as he watched Fabrice Ondoa block his decisive penalty.

Coulibally, Mboji, Moussa Sow and Saivet made no mistake for the Lions of Teranga in the first four kicks but Mane let the team down when needed most.

Mane stepped up for the penalty and shot to the middle but Ondoa, who was initially flying right, blocked with his left hand to maintain it at 4-4.

Aboubakar powered to the top corner to send the Cameroon fans and bench into frenzy.

Senegal wasted several clear cut chances throughout the 120 minutes which later turned costly in what seemed like a repeat of the 2002 quarter finals between the two sides where Cameroon won 3-2 after shootouts.

Moukandjo, Bitolo, Taikeu and Zoua scored the others for Cameroon.

Balde, Mame Diouf, Mboji and Mane all saw their efforts fail during normal time with Ondoa doing well in his goal though the four time champions maintained a high defensive line in most parts of the game.

Cameroon will face the stronger side between DR Congo and Ghana in the second semifinal. Burkina Faso also progressed at the expense of Tunisia in the earlier game.

Senegal: Abdoulaye Diallo, Kara Mbodji, Kalidou Koulibaly, Cheikh Mbengue (86′ Saliou Ciss), Idrissa Gana Gueye, Cheikhou Kouyate (109′ Badou Ndiaye), Sadio Mane, Balde Diao Keita, Lamine Gassama, Henri Saivet

Afcon 2017: Burkina Faso Stage Late Surge to Oust Tunisia

Burkina Faso became the first team to book a semi final spot in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations following a 2-0 victory over Tunisia on Saturday night.

Aristide Vance and Prejuce Nakoulma both struck in the last ten minutes to send the unfancied Stallions to the last four.

The match was destined for another 30 minutes of extra time before Burkina Faso coach Paulo Duarte introduced gangly striker Aristides Bance for Cryille Bayala with only 14 minutes to time.

Four minutes later, Ben Youssef was wrongly judged to have handled the ball outside the box and freekick awarded. Bance fired in below the wall after Bertrand Traore had rolled the ball on his way.

Tunisia narrowly survived a minute later when Bance’s shot from Bertrand Traore’s pass hit the post. Efforts to convert the resultant rebound were closed down by the Tunisians who later launched an assault in the opposite box.

The attack turned costly for the Carthage Eagles. Ibrahim Traore collected a clearance just outside the Burkinabe box and crossed to Nakoulma who crossed the centre line on the break before rounding Tunisia’s keeper who was in an unfamiliar territory. The striker raced and tapped the ball on an empty net.

Burkina Faso will await the result in the match between Egypt and Morocco to know their semifinal opponents.

Burkina Faso: Herve Koffi Kouakou, Steeve Yago, Bakary Kone, Prejuce Nakoulma, Abdou Razack Traore, Issoufou Dayo, Charles Kabore, Yacouba Coulibaly. Ibrahim Blati Toure (87′ Bakary Sare), Cyrille Bayala (76′ Aristide Bance), Bertrand Traore (86′ Alain Traore)

Tunisia: Aymen Mathlouthi, Siam Ben Youssef, Aymen Abdennour, Yousesf Msakni, Wahbi Khazri (63′ Hamza Lahmar), Taha Yassine Khenissi (86′ Saber Khalifa), Ferjani Sassi (86′ Ahmed Akaichi), Mohamed Amine Ben Amor, Mohamed Ali Yacoubi, Hamdi Nagguez,  Naim Sliti.

Senegal Coach Rues Selfishness

Senegal woefully crushed out of the Africa cup of nations after their star striker Sadio Mane wasted a decisive penalty to gift Cameroon a 5-4 victory.

The attack line that also had Balde and Kouyate squandered several goal scoring opportunities in front of goal and looks like the coach is not taking the lack of coordination lightly.

“We were not collective upfront and missed a lot of chances,” Cisse noted.

“What we missed (on Saturday) was the fact that some players failed to realise that they cannot do it alone. It is a big disappointment for me and the entire team.”

The Indomitable Lions maintained a solid back line and were backed up by Ondoa’s superb goalkeeping that climaxed with a penalty save during the shoot outs.

“The Cameroonian defence was compact from the start till the end. We created several opportunities but they resisted all our attacks.”

Senegal were odds on favorite to claim this year’s title after going through the qualifiers unscathed and also first to book a quarter final berth as early as match day two.

Cisse believes the team is still work in progress and can do much better in future.

”For 11 years, Senegal failed to reach this stage. We have worked for two years to reach here. However, there is still a lot of work to be done.

“The elimination is not easy for us. It is hard for us and the country, who were expecting so much from us. I feel sorry for the players who wanted to write their own piece of history.”

Ivory Coast coach Dussuyer has relinquished his job after the defending champions’ early exit from the Africa cup of Nations in Gabon.

The Frenchman Michael Dussuyer becomes the second coach after Algeria’s George Leekens threw in the towel last week immediately after failing to make it past the groups

Ivory Coast football federation announced the developments on Sunday afternoon while praising the coach for professionalism, commitment and human quality.

They added that “The appropriate measures will be put in place to find his successor.”

The 57 year old struggled to qualify for the Nations cup registering only a single win in a group that had Sierra Leone and Sudan.

The poor form extended to the finals in Gabon where the Elephants picked two opening draws against DR Congo and Togo before losing out to Morocco.

He joined Ivory Coast in July 2015 after guiding Guinea to the quarter-finals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana are through to their seventh successive semifinal in the Africa Cup of Nations following a scrappy 2-1 victory over DR Congo on Sunday night.

The Black Stars seemed drowsy in the first half same to their opponents but two goals from brothers Jordan and Andre Ayew sealed the spot for Avram Grant’s side.

Paul-Jose M’Poku cracking long range strike in the 68th minute could only cancel Jordan Ayew’s opener and turned out to be the consolation for the Congolese.

The West Africans missed the services of their captain Asamoah Gyan due to an injury he suffered in their last group D game.

Dieumerci Mbokani nearly propelled the DR Congo side as early the eighth minute but his feeble shot hit the woodwork. His second closest attempt from a powerful long range drive was thwarted by Razak Brimah six minutes into the half hour mark.

Ghana returned from the break invigorated with an immediate attempt four minutes later. Christian Atsu launched an attack heading to the box but was hacked down by Mbemba just at the edge.

Wakaso’s curling freekick bounced and troubled Matampi who fumbled to clear away with his leg.

Wakaso turned the helper after the hour when he intercepted a pass in DRC half and split a pass to Jordan who reduced the distance, dummied the centre backs and curled to the far end for the opener.

M’poku equalized five minutes later before Andre Ayew scored the winner from the spot.

Both Keepers, Brimah and Matampi, made good saves later on to maintain the score lines.

Ghana will play Cameroon on Thursday in the second semifinal.

Another last minute goal sealed a semifinal spot for Egypt’s Pharaohs as they edged out Morocco 1-0 in a tight North African encounter in Port-Gentil on Sunday.

The Pharaohs are returning to the continental stage after missing the previous three editions in 2012, 2013 and 2015 due to political instability that nearly tore the country apart.

Egypt made the first attempt on goal as early as the fifth minute through El Mohamady whose shot was blocked inside the six yards from Salah’s earlier effort.

Salah created another chance with a tricky cross that eluded the whole Morocco defense to find Hassan but his first time delivery was cleared off the line by the keeper.

Romain Saiss also wasted a chance for the Moroccans after the half four failing to tap in Da Costa’s cross which found him unmarked inside six.

Salah continued his brilliance in the second half. After three minutes, he was able to navigate past three defenders but stabbed the ball onto the keeper in a one on one.

The Roma attacker missed another close one in the 76th. El Said chipped a cheeky free kick for Salah to volley in but the keeper miraculously pulled a stunning save from inside four yards.

Substitute Mahmoud Kahraba turned the saviour for the seven time champions with a late 88th minute winner. Kahraba came in the 63rd minute for Karim Hafez.

Salah had drilled in a low corner for Kahraba to brush. His initial attempt skewed but hit on Hassan and Kahraba volleyed in on the bounce before Benatia could clear off.

Egypt will face Burkina Faso in the first semifinal on Wednesday.
