AUPL: Malingumu Scores Brace to Stun Former Side

Uganda Premier League
The Saints 2-0 BUL

Julius Malingumu struck twice as Saints defeated BUL in the Azam Uganda Premier League game played at the Champions stadium, Mwererwe on Friday.

A goal in either half from the fast striker ensured he stunned his former employers who released him in January this year.

Playing at their new home ground for the first time, the Saints looked the better side right from kickoff despite both teams failing to create enough chances.

Veteran striker Wakaza had the first attempt at goal in the opening two minute albeit his effort went just wide.

Malingumu kept troubling the visitor’s centre backs (Asuman Alishe and Junior Mukisa) and he almost broke the deadlock at the 20th minute mark but his header off Rogers Aloro’s cross went fruitless.

The stocky forward put the army side ahead with three minutes to play in the first half with an absolute beauty.

Malingumu received the ball on the right wing from Rogers Aloro about 40 yards from goal and he curled the ball beyond goalkeeper Paul Munjampani’s reach.

Three minutes after recess,Malingu doubled Saint’s lead dribbling through BUL’s defence before slotting the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Despite several attempts from BUL and perhaps a better display in the second stanza, Saints remained impenetrable at the back.

Manager Frank Anyau brought on Isaac Sserunkuma, Godfrey Buni and Razak Saheed but all efforts seemed futile on the day.

Godfrey Wakabu limped off after sustaining an injury in the 68th minute and was replaced by Augustine Walusimbi

The result moves Saints from 12th position to 9th on 21 points while BUL remain locked in the drop zone in 14th position on 16 points

AUPL: Lifeline for Bisaso, Kirya as SC Villa Take on Lweza

Uganda Premier League
SC Villa vs Lweza
Nakivubo stadium 4:00pm

SC Villa head coach Shafik Bisaso has one option at offer to save his job and that’s to pick maximum points against Lweza on Saturday.

After a dismal start to the second round which has seen the club pick just two points in 2 games (0-0 vs Bright stars and 1-1 vs JMC), SC Villa President, Eng. Ben Misagga issued a one match ultimatum to coach Bisaso.

In the same breath, Ibrahim Kirya the head coach at Lweza is in a similar situation like Bisaso. Anything less than a win could earn him a sack according to reliable sources within the club.

Lweza have lost the opening two games of the second round and increasingly move closer to relegation.

Grounded at 12th position on the table, the Orange brigade have 18 points, just two adrift the drop zone.

Kirya however blames the poor results on lack of coordination within the team given the fact that it is virtually a new team assembled.

“It is true we are struggling but I would entirely put that on lack of coordination. Most of the players are new so you need more time for then to jell together,” he said.

“This time of the season is tricky because everyone is fighting for points but we shall put our bodies on the line to make sure we pick positive results against SC Villa,” Kirya added.

Despite losing ground in the title run, SC Villa have a chance to dislodge KCCA FC at the summit if they win.

Victory for the blues will move them to 36 points, one ahead of KCCA FC albeit with two games more.

SC Villa boasts of a better head to head against Lweza unbeaten in the five league meetings. (Won 4 and Drawn once).

Caf CC: Vipers Targeting Victory in Comoros

Vipers enter their second part of the Preliminary round in the Caf Confederations Cup against Volcano club on Saturday at the Stade Moroni.

Under coach Richard Waswa and Edward Golola, the team will seek to emulate their local cup predecessors, SC Villa who cruised through the same stage with ease and lost in the second round.

This is Vipers first ever appearance in this competition. They carry a 0-0 draw from the first leg in Kampala.

“We have done lots of homework, polishing and tied up the loose ends,” coach Richard Waswa noted ahead of the do or die clash.

“We have to create and convert our chances into goals and defend well, that is our main purpose here.”

Volcano Club De Moroni, just like Vipers, have won the local league twice in their existence and four Comoros cups but it’s not until 2015 and 2016 that they participated in the continental games.

The Comoros club lost 5-0 to Angolan club Petro de Luanda in the 2015 preliminary rounds with 4-0 away and 1-0 at home. They lost 1-0 Kaiser Chiefs lamidfield midfieldrst leg and dished out a walkover in the second. That means the team has failed to score a goal in five continental appearances.

How will Vipers lineup?

Ismail Watenga is expected to maintain his position in between the posts.

Captain Nicholas Wadada and Aggrey Madoi do the business in the respective wing back spots as Halid Lwaliwa partners shafiq Bakaki at the heart of defense.

Deus Bukenya is likely to maintain his place in the midfield as Moses Waiswa and Keziron Kizito complement the attack.

Tony Odur, Sekisambu and Kalisa could all make a start as the coach is looking for an attacking formula.

Uganda Premier League
SC Villa 2-2 Lweza

Sports club Villa missed out the opportunity of ascending to the summit of the league table after playing to a 2 all draw against Lweza.

Amidst protests from fans that carried placards in support of the embattled coach Shafik Bisaso who was given a one match ultimatum, Villa registered their third consecutive draw.

SC Villa dropped a two goal lead with Lweza surging up in the final 20 minutes to level the score in a game played on Saturday at Nakivubo stadium.

In a game that was a do or die affair for coaches of either side, SC Villa started the better side dominating the proceedings especially in the first half but the visitors put up a spirited comeback in the second stanza to salvage a point.

Emmanuel Arnold Okwi opened the scores in the 28th minute heading home Joseph Nsubuga’s cross from the right to hand the Jogoos a perfect start.

Eleven minutes after recess, forward Alex ‘Benzema’ Kitata doubled the lead and SC Villa seemed destined for their first win in the second round of the league.

However, things fell apart when Okwi got injured and was replaced by midfielder Dennis Kamanzi in the 67th minute while Vitalis Tabu had earlier on replaced Martin Kiiza who troubled Lweza’s  defence.

Ibrahim Kirya, the Lweza head coach also brought on Kisakye John Wesley and Charles Ssempa for Julius Adebo and Juma Balinya respectively.

The changes paid off dividends and especially Ssempa who provided two assists.

Rajab Kakooza tapped home Ssempa’s cross from the right side of the field in the 71st minute to give hope to the visitors.

Dennis Kamanzi had a chance to put the game beyond reach with four minutes left but failed to put the ball past goalkeeper Ivan Mutumba in a one on one situation.

Lweza caught Villa on a quick counter attack ignited by Ismail Kazibwe before Ssempa laid up Owen Kasule to level the matters in the 87th minute.

Villa fans stormed the pitch after the game carrying placards in support of coach Shafik Bisaso while blaming club President for bringing on board former Express coach Wasswa Bossa.

The result means SC Villa remain second on the table with 34 points while Lweza remain grounded in 12th position on 19points

Left with just six games to play in the regular season, Maroons brightened their chances of returning to the Uganda premier league with yet another victory.

Maroons defeated Moroto United 2-0 on Saturday at the Prisons ground in Luzira to stretch their lead at the top of the Elgon group to 11 points.

Obuya who returned to Maroons at the start of the second round continued with his sublime form scoring his third goal in 4 games to give Maroons the lead in the 24th minute.

The sizzling midfielder scored against Simba and Doves All stars.

Bisaso Remains Unfazed Despite Job Hanging In Balance

The game against Lweza on Saturday could be Shafik Bisaso’s last game in charge at SC Villa if the ultimatum issued by club President, Eng. Ben Misagga is anything to go by.

After the stalemate against JMC Hippos last week, Misagga issued a one game ultimatum to the technical team (Head Coach; Shafik Bisaso, Technical Director; Yusuf Kyeyune and team manager; Valley Mugwanya)

SC Villa head coach Shafik Bisaso insists he still harbors plans of remaining at Villa park despite results not coming through and his job hanging in balance.

Bisaso insists SC Villa are going just through a depression period just like any other team in the world would be but he is confident they will return to winning ways very soon.

“It is true the desired results are not coming our way but like any other team SC Villa is going through a struggling phase. If you have followed our three games in the second round there’s progress despite not winning,” said Bisaso.

“We failed to score against Bright stars, the next game we scored but failed to defend, against Lweza, we led 2-0 but threw away the advantage in the final 20 minutes,” he added.

Asked whether he was aware of the ultimatum, Bisaso said he knows about it but insists he is still in charge.

“I’m aware of the ultimatum but at the moment, I’m still the head coach at SC Villa may be until the executive come up with their decision,” said a confident Bisaso.

SC Villa threw away a two goal lead on Saturday to draw 2-2 against Lweza and miss out on the opportunity of ascending to the summit of the league at least for a week before KCCA FC play.

Deus Bukenya’s equalizer late in the first half against Comoros side Volcani De Moroni was all that Vipers SC needed to advance to the first round of the Caf Confederation’s cup.

The match was played at the Stade De Moroni in Comoros.

The hosts caused early panic to the Ugandans with an early goal from a miscommunication between Watenga and Shafiq Bakaki.

Kalisa, Sekisambu and Onekalit came near to an equaliser thereafter but the Volcani defense remained resolute until the 27th minute when Deus Bukenya headed in a cross from Wadada.

Vipers will face Platinum Stars from South Africa in the first round to be played in March.

Bright stars 1-1 Soana

Bright stars needed a late penalty to avoid a loss against Soana in the Uganda premier league game played at the champions stadium, Mwererwe on Saturday.

An own goal by Bright stars defender, Innocent Asiimwe gave the visitors the lead but defender Sula Ssebunza stepped up to convert from the spot kick to salvage a point for Fred Kajjoba’s charges.

Bright stars made three changes from the team that won against Lweza last week with Hakim Mugerwa, Abdunoor Kanana and Seif Batte starting.

Mugerwa repaced Andrew Kaggwa at the right back position while Kanana who was played his first game since the start of the second round played ahead of Aksam Mutyaba in central defence.

Stocky and pacy winger cum striker Seif Batte who was relegated to the bench in the game against Lweza returned to the starting XI ahead of Farouk Banga.

Soana who were playing their second game in the second round took the lead in the 24th minute when defender Innocent Assimwe connected the ball into his own net.

Despite several attempts by the home side to level matters, Soana remained resilient at the back.

However, with the game destined towards the end, Bright stars were awarded a late penalty after substitute Samson Jakech was fouled inside the 18 yard box.

Defender Ssula Ssebunza held his nerves to convert from the resultant penalty in added time for Bright stars to walk away with at least a point.

Soana moved one place up on the table to 6th just like Bright stars who follow closely in 7th both on 25 points.
