Uganda Premier League
SC Villa vs URA FC
Masaka Recreation ground 4:30pm

With the league winding up this weekend, the encounter between SC Villa and URA FC comes a day earlier than the other fixtures.

The game initially scheduled for Saturday was brought forward by the league organising committee to allow the final of the ongoing National post primary tournament take place given the fact they use the same venue (Masaka Recreation ground).

Sports Club Villa have already secured the second position and as they take on Uganda Revenue Authority FC this Friday, there won’t be anything to fight for other than pride.

The Jogoos come into this encounter on the back of a hard fought victory against SC Vipers on Tuesday which itself gives them confidence ahead of their final game.

Head coach Wasswa Bossa indicates, they need to finish on an impressive note as they prepare for next season.

“We shall go into the final game expecting maximum points because we need to end the season on a high,” said Bossa.

On the other hand, URA FC have been in scintillating form since Ibrahim Kirya took charge and would also be seeking for a positive result in Masaka.

The tax collectors picked a 1-0 victory against Bright stars courtesy of Bokoto Labama’s strike.

Villa will continue to miss the services of Emma Okwi who is still on suspension, Ambrose Kirya and Paul Mbowa are still doubtful to feature today.

URA FC start life without Hamis Kiiza who has switched to Sudanese side Al Hilal at the start of this week.

The first round meeting between the two sides ended in a one all draw at Mehta stadium in Lugazi.

The encounters between Kibuli Secondary school and St.Mary’s Kitende have never come easy for the times the two sides have met.

And the two sides meet once again in Masaka as the semifinal draw held on Thursday evening pitted the two sides.

This is a repeat of last year’s final where Kibuli SS won in a penalty shootout in Soroti and Kitende will be seeking for revenge.

Defending champions Kibuli managed to grind past hosts Masaka SS in a hotly contested encounter where Kibuli finished with 9 players but managed to win the shootout 3-1.

Therefore, the 10 time winners come into the semifinal clash on Friday without two influential players in Adam Musisi and captain Fred Tabu.

Kitende on the either hand who are seeking for their 8th title edged past Dynamic SS in another close contest that was eventually determined on spot kicks.

In the other semifinal, Jinja SS who have been in scintillating form since the start of the tournament take on Nakaseke International.

Jinja SS led by sharp shooter Joel Madondo eased past Citizen High School from Isingiro outwitting them 5-1 while Nakaseke edged past Jinja Progressive Academy (JIPRA).

The final will be played on Saturday at Masaka recreation ground with the top three teams representing Uganda at the East African games to be held in Gulu in August.

The 2017 National basketball league gets underway this Friday with a repeat of last season’s final as Betway Power take on defending champions City Oilers at the MTN Arena, Lugogo.

Power head coach Arnold Lando has the conviction that his team will have a better shape than they were the previous campaign beginning with the opener against City Oilers.

“We have had a perfect off season, tried to evaluate ourselves, what we did and didn’t do last season and how best we can improve. We want to start the season in a positive way and thus we are ready for the game,” he stated.

Power have beefed up their squad bringing on board several new players including Sande Okot, Francis Kasinde among others to beef their squad and Lando believes he has got depth in squad.

“Last season, we played with a small team and we did have a good bench but I believe the new acquisitions give us depth that we need,” Lando noted.

On the other hand, City Oilers have kept almost their squad intact with the major departure being Kami Kabangu who moved to Rwanda.

However, the four time champions already acquired Stephen Umony from Falcons to try and fill the void.

The opening game of the day will be in the ladies category where defending champions UCU Lady Canons will take on A1 challenge

A1 have lost several players including, Dorothy Kyamazima, a notable Guard who crossed to KCCA Leopards, while, Nanyonga Rachel and Birungi Desire crossed to Magic Stormers where they earlier played.

Meme Rukia is out on maternity leave and likely to be out for long spells.

However, A1 have boosted their squad in signing, Nyapendi Maureen from St Mary’s Kitende, Akol Elizabeth from Lioness, Norah Namutosi, Ainematsiko Marco from Lioness, Kirungi Charlene from Gladiators as well as Kirungi Ruth.

UCU Lady Canons haven’t lost any key player, they will kick start the season with the same players that helped them win the league as they got the better spoils against A1 Challenge .

Having won the league back to back Lady Canons will be looking for nothing less.

Ahead of the final on Saturday at Masaka Recreation ground, Jinja SS will be aiming at defying odds to lift the title as they take on traditional giants St. Mary’s Kitende.

The eastern giants put up a spirited fight to go past Nakaseke International in the semifinal that had to be decided on penalties after normal time ended in a one all stalemate.

Jinja SS eventually held their nerves to win the penalty shootout 3-1 and book a berth in their first ever final.

On the other hand, St. Mary’s Kitende needed a resilient performance to eject defending champions Kibuli SS at the muddy arena playground, Kitovu in the second semifinal on Friday.

A first brace from Brian Kalumba was enough to send Kitende to their 10th final despite Kibuli pulling one back through midfielder Joel Jangeyange.

The battle for the crown will be orchestrated by the clinical forwards that both teams have.

Jinja SS have Joel Madondo who has so far scored 11 goals while St. Mary’s Kitende will heavily rely on Vipers forward Pius Wangi.

St. Mary’s Kitende put up a spirited performance to edge past hard fighting Kibuli SS in the semifinal of the 2017 National post primary school tournament.

In a repeat of last year’s final, St. Mary’s won 2-1 to earn revenge against Kibuli SS at the Arena playground in Masaka town.

Brian Kalumba scored a first half brace to help Kitende reach the final despite Joel Jangeyange pulling one back for Kibuli.

As early as the 5th minute, Kalumba had scored the opener at the muddy arena pitch and he scored another for Kitende to take a comfortable 2-0 halftime lead.

Kibuli came back the better side after restart making several chances as Kitende resorted to time wasting tactics.

Joel Jagenyange scored arguably the goal of the tournament, a scorcher from about 45 yards to give Kibuli hopes of a comeback.

However, Kitende held on to win the game 2-1 and storm the finals where they will take on Jinja SS who earlier on defeated Nakaseke International in the first semifinal.

The final will be played on Saturday at Masaka Recreational ground but Kibuli will take on Nakaseke first at 2pm in the third place playoff.

Villa cemented their stay in the second spot on the table edging past URA FC in the game played at Masaka Recreation ground on Friday.

Masaka Recreation ground will host the final of the national post primary schools tournament that also climaxes on Saturday with Jinja SS playing St. Mary’s Kitende in the finals.

Jinja SS 1(4-3)1 St.Mary’s  Kitende

Jinja Secondary school emerged winners of the 2017 National Post Primary schools tournament after edging past traditional giants St. Mary’s Kitende in the final played at the Masaka Recreation ground on Saturday.

In a game attended by a mammoth crowd, Jinja SS defied the odds to go on and win their first ever title emerging victorious in a tense penalty shootout (4-3) after normal time had ended in a one all draw

The game lived to the billing with either side proving they were worth to be in the finals. Sharp shooter Joel Madondo put Jinja SS in the lead but lanky forward Kennedy Kasozi leveled matters at the death of the clock for Kitende and the game had to be decided on penalties

Jinja SS had a goal disallowed as early as the 8th minute with Ivan Wani flagged offside. Madondo had fired a thunderous effort with keeper Eric Kibowa saved but Wani was quick to fire home the rebound albeit it was cancelled.

Kitende on the other end were awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute after defender Peter Ssebagala was judged to have held the ball inside the area but Pius Wangi blew the chance from the spot kick wide firing above the goal area.

Crafty midfielder Francis Tumwesigye alias Zagga was withdrawn at the start of second half and replaced by Watambala Abdu after sustaining an injury. Pius Wangi also paved way for Mpanga Sulaiman.

Madondo put Jinja SS ahead in the 71st minute firing home from close range to send the fully parked stadium into frenzy. He however did not finish the game after pulling a muscle and limped off with 5 minutes to play.

With the game destined for the end, Kitende leveled matters after poor defending by Jinja SS cost them as Kasozi picked a back pass from Innocent Okatwengu to fire home.

Jinja SS however held the nerves to win the penalty shootout 4-3 with Asiku Bashir and Abdu Watambala missing their spot kicks for Kitende.

Kibuli SS had defeated Nakaseke International earlier on in the third placeoff 1-0 courtesy of Julius Poloto’s goal and the three teams will now represent Uganda at the East African games scheduled for August in Gulu district.

Caf Confederation Cup
KCCA 2-1 Club Africain

A goal in either half of the game ensured Tunisian side Club Africain suffered defeat on their second visit on Ugandan soil at the hands of KCCA FC on Tuesday.

Club Africain were held to a one all draw by SC Villa in their previous visit to Uganda in 1991.

The visitors however on Tuesday were the first to see the back of the net, thanks to a Mokhtar Belkhither’s strike that caught the Kasasiro boys defence sleeping  and also  goal keeper Benjamin Ochan static in the 19th minute.

However, towards recess, the hosts who had exhibited prowess scored through on form Derrick Nsibambi to level the matters at the Philip Omondi stadium in Lugogo.

Youngster Allan Okello and Tom Matsiko had field days on Tuesday with a number of erratic passes and displays that dazzled the Tunisian players.

The home side continued pinning the visitors until the 62nd minute mark when Matsiko sent a belter towards the Tunisian goalkeeper Ben Mustapha who had nothing to do with the ball only to let it inside the net for KCCA’s second goal.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, KCCA coach Mike Mutebi praised his boys for being tactically good on the day.

“They were tactically fantastic and played the team’s best game this season,”Mutebi said of his team.

“We were in command in the midfield, pressing and forcing them to drop balls.”

KCCA now have 3 points from 2 games after losing their first group A game against Moroccan side FUS Rabat played away in Morocco.

Mutebi Impressed by Youngster Okello ‘Luminous’ Display Against Club Africain

Following their first group A loss to FUS Rabat in Morocco a few weeks ago, Uganda Premier League defending champions KCCA FC lifted themselves up to beat Tunisia giants Club Africain 2-1 in Kampala on Tuesday .

From a goal down, Kasasiro boys fought to the last man until they were able to bag all the 3 points, but this display didn’t go unnoticed by their head coach Mike Mutebi who attributed it to youngster Allan Okello.

“His return made the difference. His creativity level was so good,”Mutebi said of the 18 year old Kibuli SS youngster who was only elevated to the senior team this season in a post-match press conference.

The left footed midfielder was all over the pitch making erratic passes as well setting up KCCA fowards as the home team looked the better side on the day.

Okello was however in the 68th minute substituted for another enterprising midfielder Paul Mucureezi but according to Mutebi, his presence on the pitch was felt by the entire team.

The youngster who was sitting for exams missed KCCA FC’s opening group A game in Rabat, a few weeks ago

“He is my best player. When he was still on the pitch, every player looked good,” the Kasasiro boys’ tactician said on Tuesday.

Mutebi however praised the entire team for what he termed as the best display this season.

Apart from a small mistake in the 16th minute by the KCCA defenders that cost them a goal, the team was fantastic on the day.

Defender Habib Kavuma who played as a left back was on many occasions seen making moves foward, something unusual of him.

“My team was technically fantastic. We were in the command of midfield, pressing and forcing them to throw away balls,” Mutebi praised his team.

He said the players believed in themselves, moving from a goal down to win the game at Lugogo.

“The goals they scored were not accidental but constructed. They were fantastic goals. This shows the boys perfected what we did during training, “the tactician said of his team.

KCCA have now collected 3 points from 2 games played in group A of the Caf Confederation Cup.

ICC WCL: Dull Start for Uganda as Canada Outwits Cricket Cranes

$

Canada’s tournament got off to an excellent start with a 66 run win over hosts Uganda.

Canada batted after winning the toss, and the match was reduced to 42 overs/ side due to rain preventing a prompt start.

After a good opening, Canada’s innings became becalmed after they lost three wickets in four balls.

They were rescued by a brilliant innings of 91 in 44 balls by Rizwan Cheema (the ICC have posted some brief highlights on Facebook), allowing them to post a respectable total of 234/8.

A fine opening spell from Cecil Pervez put them in a strong position, and the rest of the bowlers gave little away as Uganda were bowled out for 168.

Pervez finished with 4 wickets for 44. Canada now face Oman (who beat USA in their opening match) tomorrow.

Nitish Kumar and Bhavindhu Adhihetty opened the batting for Canada, with the rest of the team being Dhaliwal, Pathirana, Hansra, Rizwan Cheema, Dutta, Hamza Tariq, Saad Bin Zafar, Dhindsa, and Pervez.

They got off to a fast start, putting on 32 before Adhihetty was leg before for 12 in the 5th over. Kumar, now batting with Dhaliwal, brought up the half-century in the 10th over with his second six.

Cricket Cranes could hardly believe what had hit them

Cricket Cranes could hardly believe what had hit them

Dhaliwal struck a couple of boundaries but was struggling to score against the spinners, and was caught off slow left armer Ssenondo for 15 from 31 balls.

Kumar had made 43 at a run a ball but was brilliantly run out by Charles Waiswa (ICC video) two balls later, and Jimmy Hansra was leg before first ball.

Canada had been in a good position at 74/1 but lost three wickets in 4 balls- 74/4 after 15.1 overs. After the flurry of wickets, Dutta and Pathirana were forced on the defensive and the next five overs yielded only 8 runs.

Dutta broke the deadlock with a six but then only three runs came from the next 27 deliveries. Pathirana had made 4 from 33 balls before he broke the shackles with another six, but the 5th wicket fell in the 29th over when Dutta(14) was caught – 104/5, and their 30 run partnership had taken 13.1 overs.

This brought in Rizwan Cheema who, as usual, went on the attack. He was dropped at long on when he’d made just three but then took 16 from Ssenyondo’s 8th over- he had bowled his previous 7 for just 20.

It took him just 11 balls to overtake Pathirana, who himself took 12 off the 34th over to bring up 150. Cheema’s fifty came up in just 27 balls, and the partnership yielded 105 runs in 10.2 overs before Pathirana was out hit wicket for 35 (72).

Rizwan Cheema’s brilliant innings came to an end in the final over, caught in the deep for 91 from 44 balls, three fours and ten sixes (most of them over long-on). Uganda needed 235 to win.

4

Cecil Pervez made an immediate impact, taking two wickets in his first over, and another in his second to reduce the hosts to 20/3.

Like Canada, Uganda had to go on the defensive. Nikhil Dutta broke a steady 49 run partnership in his second over, catching Ukani from his own bowling, then bowled Mukasa in his third – 71/5.

The bowlers kept it tight and Uganda started falling well behind the required run rate. Saad Bin Zafar took the 6th wicket with the score on 113 and Uganda needing 10/ over.

Mohammed Irfan got off the mark with a six, and after being dropped hit another. Kumar brought back the opening bowlers, as move which was met with success when Cecil Pervez took his fourth wicket.

Mohammed Irfan was run out after looking dangerous then Dhindsa administered the coup-de-grace taking the last two wickets in consecutive balls – Canada won by 66 runs. Pervez took 4/44, Dhindsa 2/14 and Dutta bowled 6 overs for 14 runs and two wickets.

3

In other matches, USA lost to Oman; USA made 180/7 from their 42 overs and Oman had a comfortable 4 wicket win.

Malaysia were bowled out for 120 by Singapore who passed their total with 7 wickets and 81 balls remaining. 21 year old off-spinner Navin Param took 4/10 and Anish Param made an unbeaten 50 for Singapore.

Uganda Cup Semifinals, First Leg
KCCA FC vs Express FC
Phillip Omondi stadium

Kampala Capital City Authority football club will be seeking to take home advantage as they bid to clinch the elusive double (winning the league and Uganda cup) this season.

Ahead of the first leg in the semifinal against record champions Express FC this Friday at Phillip Omondi stadium, KCCA FC manager, Mike Hillary Mutebi believes his team comes into the game in high spirits.

“We are quite prepared and the fact that we come into this game on the back of a good performance against Club Africain in the confederation, this will itself motivate us. Games against Express are never easy but I believe we have the potential to take home advantage in the first leg,” said Mutebi.

With the league title already under their possession, the target for KCCA FC is to try and win the domestic double that has eluded them for time immemorial. Even last season, the Lugogo based side was stopped at the semifinal stage by eventual winners Vipers.

Mutebi confirmed that he will make a few changes from the team that played against club Africain with goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan taking the sidelines as Douglas Kisembo and Charles Lukwago battle for the starting slot in goal.

Youngster Allan Okello is cap tied having played for KCCA Corporate team at the initial stages of the competition and thus will not be available with Nigerian import Suleimon Akinyemi expected to start.

On the other hand, Express FC head coach Matia Lule is confident his team can pull off a descent result on Friday before the return leg in Wankulukuku.

“It will not be an easy game, the fact that KCCA FC are already champions of the league but that doesn’t faze us. We are up for the challenge and the target will be to make sure we get a good result at Lugogo,” he said.

Express who have won the competition 10 times will be seeking to win the prize for the first time in 10 years with their previous triumph coming in 2007. However, the red eagles will miss the services of defender Vincent Onyebuchi who broke his leg and will be on the sidelines for at least six months.

The winner over the two legs will take on either Paidha Black Angels or Sadolin Paints who play in the other semifinal with the former having a 2-0 first leg advantage.

The final is scheduled for 10th June at the Greenlight stadium in Arua district.

Sharp Football Club will represent Western region in next season’s Fufa Big league. This comes after the Kabale based side defeated Rushere FC in the promotional playoff final played at the Kyamate sports ground in Ntungamo district on Thursday.

Sharp FC who were sublime in the regular season coming through the Kigezi group unbeaten edged past Rukungiri’s Rushere FC in a closely contested final to book a berth in next season’s Big league.

Cleofas Fiat and Joram Turinawe rose to the occasion scoring a goal apiece for Sharp FC to win the final 2-1. Isma Luyombya had pulled one back for Rushere midway through the game.

The contest produced no dividends in the opening 45 minutes with the game ending in a barren stalemate at the end of first half. However, Fiat Cleofas broke the deadlock five minutes after recess.

Rushere leveled matters 15 minutes later through skipper Isma Luyombya who converted from the spot kick after a Sharp defender had held the ball inside the forbidden area.

With the game destined for a penalty shootout, forward Joram Tturinawe had other options restoring Sharp FC’s lead in the 85th minute to send the crowd into wild cheers.

To reach the final, Rushere FC had defeated Rukungiri United while Sharp FC eliminated Mbarara FC in the semifinal playoffs.

Sharp FC will now be the second team from Western region to play in next season’s Fufa Big league joining Nyamityobora FC from Mbarara. They also join Ntinda umited from Kampala region as the two teams that have won promotion to next season’s Big league.

Kampala Capital City Football Club (KCCA FC) moved closer to reaching this year’s Uganda Cup final after edging past Express FC.

In the game played at Philip Omondi stadium on Friday, KCCA FC won the close contest 3-2.

Geoffrey Serunkuuma scored a brace while on form midfielder Tom Masiko scored the other to help KCCA FC win the first leg.

Simon Serunkuuma and Allan Kyambadde scored for the visitors but the goals only settled for consolations.

KCCA FC began the better side creating several chances but it took Masiko’s brilliance to put the home side ahead with a superb free kick in the 37th minute.

The crafty midfielder stepped up from about 20 yards to curl the ball beyond goalkeeper Emma Opio’s reach.

The second half produced a different ball game with Express stepping up play to march KCCA FC in terms of ability.

Geoffrey Serunkuuma doubled the lead from the spot kick after a foul on Tom Masiko inside the area and the former did no mistake to convert three minutes after recess.

However, Express halved the deficit through Simon Serunkuuma who slotted past onrushing goalkeeper Douglas Kisembo.

The hopes for the comeback were squashed immediately with Serunkuuma scoring on the other end two minutes later.

Allan Kyambadde scored the other goal for Express but was not enough to get them at least a point.

The two sides meet for the return leg next week on Tuesday at Wankulukuku with the winner going into the final slated for 10th June at Greenlight stadium in Arua district.

Despite having a game high 15 points, Pemha’s tally for JKL could only settle for the losing side. Michael Bwanga had a team high 14 points for KIU Titans.

Sadolin Paints 2-1 Paidha Black Angels
Paidha advance 3-2 on aggregate

Paidha Black Angels became the first team to reach this year’s final of the Uganda Cup after eliminating Sadolin paints on aggregate over the two legs.

After winning the first leg 2-0 at home, Paidha seemed to have had the contest done and dusted. However, Sadolin Paints had other thoughts and the return leg provided the platform.

In the game played at Mandela national stadium, the painters made a temporary comeback taking charge in the opening 45 minutes of the game to level the score with 2 goals.

Experienced forward Karim Nduggwa rose to the occasion to grab a first half brace as Sadolin surged forward and dominated proceedings.

However, midway through the second period, the visitors got the vital away goal through Fred Emaku that sent the travelling fans into wild celebrations.

Emmanuel Rubangakene did the donkey work sending a thunderous effort just outside the area and goalkeeper Hilbert Hatimu failed to deal with the strike thus giving chance to Emaku to fire home the rebound.

Paidha Black Angels now await the winner between KCCA FC and Express to determine their opponents in the final scheduled for 10th June at the Greenlight stadium in Arua district.

Express FC lost 3-2 to KCCA FC in the first leg of the semifinals played on Friday at Phillip Omondi stadium but Matia Lule is confident his team can overturn the result come next week.

“I believe we still have the chance to progress to the finals. The performance today was fantastic regardless of the loss. We kept the belief and kept pushing them until the final whistle and that was quite important,’ Lule told ChimpReports.

The outspoken tactician indicates his side committed a few mistakes that cost them the game but he is confident that will be dealt with in the days prior to the return leg.

“We were a bit careless in the goals we conceded but I know that will be addressed in the remaining days ahead of the return leg,” he asserted.

Lule also asserts that it was vital that his team managed to score 2 goals away from home and thus he is confident he can overturn the result at Wankulukuku.

“We went two goals down in the game but the belief was there that were could keep the score within reach and now that we got two goals in the first leg, we can equally score two or more at home. We just need to minimize the mistakes at the back,” he noted.

Geoffrey Sserunkuma scored a brace while Tom Masiko netted the other goal as KCCA FC won the first leg 3-2. Allan Kyambadde and Simon Sserunkuma scored for Express.

The two sides meet on Tuesday for the return leg and the winner will face Paidha Black Angels in the finals slated for 10th June at the Greenlight stadium in Arua district.

Semifinal, return leg
Express FC vs KCCA FC

With the league title already under their possession, KCCA FC target at the moment is to try to win the elusive domestic double that has for ages continued to be a dream.

KCCA FC carry a 3-2 lead into the semifinal against Express and the hope is that they can get a positive result at Wanulukuku that will help them book a berth into the finals.

Team manager, Mike Mutebi is aware of the task ahead of him but rather insists there will not be a change in game approach because they want to reach the finals.

“We will not mortgage our identity because we want to defend the lead that we got in the first leg. It will be a tough game but I insist we shall stick to our style of play,” he said.

On the other hand, Express FC coach Matia Lule is confident his team can overturn the first leg deficit and reach the finals.

“We put up a good fight in the first leg more so in the second half and that gave us the confidence that we can get a good result at home. We are set and ready to make sure we edge past KCCA FC,” said a confident Lule.

KCCA FC will miss the services of defender Timothy Awany who is out due to card accumulation while youngsters Allan Okello, Mustapha Kiiza and Julius Poloto are all cap tied.

Express will also miss key players in skipper Musa Mukasa who is suspended for card accumulation while Allan Kyambadde who scored in the first leg is sidelined with an injury.

The winner on aggregate takes on Paidha Black Angels who are already in the finals after eliminating Sadolin Paints 3-2 on aggregate. The final is slated for 10th June at Greenlight stadium.

KCCA FC advice 3-2 on aggregate

Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club have booked a berth into the finals of this year’s Uganda Cup after edging past Express.

The game almost failed to take place with Express players protesting to take to the pitch before their arrears are settled.

It took a late intervention from Hon. Nakiwala Kiyingi for players to honour the game but others like Yayo Lutimba refused.

In the return leg played on Tuesday at Muteesa II stadium Wankulukuku, the two sides settled for a baller draw.

KCCA FC created several chances but were wasteful on day failing to put away the several chances created.

Derrick Nsibambi, Geoffrey Sserunkuma and Tom Masiko all came close to scoring but were denied by goal keeper Emmanuel Opio who was brilliant on the day.

Express on the other hand had couple of chances through Noah Ssemakula but were not sharp enough in the final third of the field.

The result means KCCA FC progress to the semifinals where they will play Paidha Black Angels who edged past Sadolin Paints.

The final of this year’s Uganda Cup is slated for 10th June at Green light Stadium in Arua District.
