Striker Eric Kambale’s late header sunk Police as Express went into the Uganda Premier League break on a high recording a slim 0-1 win on Tuesday at the MTN Omondi stadium in Lugogo.
The lanky forward rose high to flick home a glancing header on the far post off Police’s poor clearance past goalkeeper Derrick Ochan who had kept the hosts in the game for 82 minutes.
The opening stanza provided little to report about following a heavy downpour making the AstroTurf waterlogged leaving both teams struggle to maintain possession.
In the second half, Express was the dominant side piling more pressure on the hosts with Godfrey Lwesibawa and Charles Musiige mounting misery from the right and left flanks.
Winger Lwesibawa narrowly scored on the hour mark but his close range finishing was denied by the upright before goalie Ochan kept out substitute Frank Kalanda and Muzamir Mutyaba distant attempts.
With eight minutes to the climax, Police defenders failed to deal with Lwesibawa’s teasing corner kick before the loose aerial ball met Kambale who rose high to nod home a reflex header sendin Express fans into wild celebrations.
Police’s limited chances came through Ben Ocen who received Dennis Rukundo’s cross at the extreme end but fired wide. Odong Johnson and Brian Muluuli failed to go past experienced defender Murushid Jjuuko while Duncan Senninde shots were too weak for custodian Dennis Otim.
The win guided Express to the 2nd position on 32 points with just one point below log leaders URA FC that has a game in hand while Police goes into the break with 25 points positioned in 5th.
