• Vipers SC 1-0 KCCA FC
Peter Magambo’s own goal inspired Vipers Sport Club home victory over rivals KCCA in the Uganda Premier League last game of the first round played on Wednesday at the St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.
The KCCA towering defender connected Disan Galiwango’s cross from the left off the poor communication with his goalkeeper and captain Charles Lukwago handing Vipers the vital win.
The Venoms proved too strong in the first half by launching relentless attacks which kept the visiting side on the receiving end. The first attempt came through Ceazer Manzoki who failed to finish off Galiwango’s delivery.
KCCA was forced into an early change when forward Charles Lwanga collided with Vipers’ defender Livingstone Mulondo before being stretchered off for striker Brian Aheebwa midway through the first stanza.
Before his own goal, Magambo cleared Vipers midfield orchestrator Abdukarim Watambala’s goal bound effort who was released through by Congolese asset Manzoki.
The major talking point arrived after 39 minutes when defender Peter Magambo’s poorly cleared ball off left back Galiwango’s cross went over custodian Lukwago and found it’s way past the goal line.
The defender thought he had retrieved the ball before crossing the line but the first assistant referee Emmanuel Okudra signaled a goal before center referee Ali Sabila pointed to the centre line for Vipers’ celebrations.
KCCA failed to respond despite the spirited fight. Aheebwa’s far post volley was dealt with by goalkeeper Fabien Mutombora while striker-turned wing back Andrew Kigozi Samson headed wide Bright Anukani’s chip.
Also, youngster Sadat Anaku wiggled through the hosts’ backline but his final shot was too weak for the Burudian shot stopper as Steven Serwadda’s access to goal was limited by Mulondo and Vipers skipper Paul Willa.
Having had ten wins, three draws and two losses, the Venoms end the first round in the second position on 33 points, six ahead of KCCA that sits in the fourth.
