Uganda Cranes dependable right back Dennis Iguma has rallied his teammates to carry the right mentality to Ghana on Friday if they’re to pick a positive result against the Black Stars in the opening 2018 Caf world cup group E qualifier.
“We need to work hard and not think that we’re going to beat them. If we’re going to get a good result, we need to go there thinking that we’re outsiders,” the defender told Fifa in an extensive interview.
The Cranes picked four points from the West Africans from both legs in the 2015 Afcon qualifiers with the Ghanaians relying on a late controversial penalty to cancel out Tonny Mawejje’s earlier strike.
“Games against Ghana always end in a result. We’ve always beaten them at home and always lost to them away. It won’t be easy for us because they know us well too,” Iguma further reiterates.
The 22-year old who features for Lebanese side Al Ahed missed Cranes Afcon 2017 final party due to accumulated cautions and was replaced by Vipers SC captain Nicolas Wadada. However he played an integral part in whole campaign which includes an assist for Khalid Aucho’s winning goal in Botswana.
He has belief Uganda can come out standing in the group E qualifiers despite facing superirior opponents both in Fifa rankings and team composition.
“There are no small teams in football. The other sides in our group are strong and they have some quality players who play in Europe. Most of our side play in Africa, with only a few based in Europe. We give our all for our country though,” he adds.
Uganda will face Togo in a shape up match on Tuesday and later fly to Tamale for the clash with Ghana on Friday.
The other group E game against Congo and Egypt will be played Sunday 9 October in Kitente, Congo.
